Todd Phillips’ 2019 film Joker is largely considered to be a masterpiece, it aptly explored the destructive character of Gotham’s most nefarious villain. The film’s sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux represented the iconic character played by Joaquin Phoenix joined by his equally unstable lover portrayed by Lady Gaga.
However, the new movie received mixed responses from fans and critics who were unamused by the several creative liberties taken by the director. One incident allegedly involved a movie-goer setting a chair on fire in protest during the screening. Although his protest had nothing to do with the film, but the lead actress’s connection to Brazil.
The absurd protest: Chaos amid movie screening
Todd Phillips‘s Joker established a legacy of its own, so fans were anticipating his glorious return with the film’s sequel in 2024. However, the unusual jukebox musical left the viewers with numerous unanswered questions and disappointment.
Fans online stated their apprehensions and dismay at the film but one fan took it too far. The Hollywood Handle posted on X about a 32-year-old movie-goer who lit the chair on fire mid-screening in Brazil.
A man puts a chair on fire at a ‘JOKER 2’ screening in São Paulo, Brazil.
The 32-year-old man "acted in protest and to draw the attention of the artist Lady Gaga" after she didn’t come to Brazil.
He promised he would do more damage if she doesn’t come.
That's a concerning situation. It's important that everyone stays safe and respects each other, regardless of disappointments. Let's hope for a peaceful resolution.

The accused in question immolated the innocent chair because he wanted to protest against the Bad Romance singer. The incident occurred during the movie’s screening in São Paulo, Brazil, and the man allegedly wanted to gain the singer’s attention. He even went on to deliver a threat of harming more chairs until she visited the country.
What’s the connection between Lady Gaga and Brazil?
In 2017, the A Star is Born actress was supposed to perform in Rio de Janeiro which she inevitably cancelled due to health complications. According to USA Today, the Poker Face singer apologized to fans for not being able to participate in Brazil’s Rock in Rio music festival.
The artist had been public with her illnesses, confessing to fans about suffering from fibromyalgia. The musculoskeletal issue caused her constant pain throughout her body, which also led to several inconveniences.
Gaga went on to reassure Brazilian fans of her love and appreciation for the country. She also promised to perform for them when she got better, to which Little Monsters filled the comments with support and get-well-soon wishes.
However, seems like one fan took the incident to heart and desperately wanted the artist to return to Brazil. The chair-on-fire incident may be provoked by the misguided love some fans have for their favorite celebrities that turns toxic when expectations are not met.
Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to hit the streaming platforms on 29 October 2024.
