Preview, team news and predicted lineups as Magdeburg welcome Kaiserslautern to the Avnet-Arena on Saturday afternoon.

In a meeting between two sides who have made encouraging starts to the 2026/27 campaign, Magdeburg will be looking to return to winning ways when they welcome Kaiserslautern to the Avnet-Arena on Saturday.

Both teams have collected six or more points from their opening four matches, with Kaiserslautern currently sitting fifth on eight points and Magdeburg just two points further back in seventh.

For Magdeburg, Saturday presents an opportunity to put last weekend’s narrow defeat to Hertha BSC behind them and move further into the chasing pack.

Petrik Sander’s side began the season with a disastrous 6-1 defeat to Braunschweig before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory in Osnabrück. They backed that up with a 2-0 home victory over Kiel, but were beaten 2-1 by Hertha last time out.

Despite Falko Michel’s first half equaliser in Berlin, Magdeburg were unable to secure at least a point after Oluwaseun Adewumi restored the hosts’ advantage shortly after half-time.

The result was particularly frustrating for Magdeburg given that they had shown enough attacking threat to take something from the game. They will now be hoping to make better use of their chances against one of the division’s strongest defensive sides.

Sander knows his side face a difficult challenge against a Kaiserslautern team that has conceded just once in four league matches.

“We have already shown that we can score goals. It’s important that we score one more than the opponent,” Sander said ahead of the game, while stressing the importance of his team imposing their own style rather than adapting too heavily to their opponents.

Set pieces could also prove important for Magdeburg. The FCM scored from a corner in their previous away game against Hertha and have identified dead-ball situations as another potential route through Kaiserslautern’s well-organised defence.

Kaiserslautern, meanwhile, travel to Saxony-Anhalt unbeaten in their opening four league matches and full of confidence following last weekend’s impressive 3-0 victory over Darmstadt.

Torsten Lieberknecht’s side have collected eight points from their opening four fixtures, winning twice and drawing twice, while conceding just a single goal.

Their campaign began with a 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg before they drew 0-0 again away to Karlsruher SC. A 2-1 victory against St. Pauli followed, before Kaiserslautern produced their most impressive performance of the campaign last weekend.

The Red Devils swept aside Darmstadt 3-0 at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, with Semih Sahin playing a key role by providing two assists. Kaiserslautern also benefited from Darmstadt missing a penalty in the first half, but ultimately deserved their comfortable victory.

The result extended their unbeaten run to five competitive matches this season and underlined the defensive solidity that has quickly become one of their biggest strengths.

Julian Krahl has been particularly impressive between the posts, making 21 saves in the league so far, the highest total in the division. Kaiserslautern have therefore conceded just once despite facing considerable pressure in several of their opening fixtures.

Lieberknecht is expecting a very different tactical challenge in Magdeburg, however, with the hosts likely to dominate possession.

“We will certainly have less possession percentage-wise. These are things you always have against Magdeburg. But that is precisely what makes the challenge so appealing,” Lieberknecht said.

The Kaiserslautern coach has also moved to play down suggestions that his side could become complacent following their excellent start.

“There is a certain stability there. We enjoy every moment, but then we are immediately focused on the next task,” Lieberknecht added.

The two sides met twice in the 2. Bundesliga last season, with Kaiserslautern winning 2-0 at home before Magdeburg claimed a 2-0 victory in the return fixture.

Saturday’s meeting therefore promises to be a fascinating tactical battle, with Magdeburg’s possession-based approach facing a Kaiserslautern side that has so far been exceptionally difficult to break down.

1. FC Magdeburg: Tobias Müller will miss Saturday’s match through suspension after receiving a second yellow card during the defeat to Hertha. Sander must therefore make at least one change to his defence. Lubambo Musonda is the other absentee. 

1. FC Kaiserslautern: Ivan Prtajin has returned to full training after around eight months out with an Achilles tendon injury but will not be rushed back and is not expected to feature. Naatan Skyttä and Owen Gibs also remain unavailable, although both have resumed light training.
