Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood
The previous season of House of the Dragon didn’t truly wrap the chapter in the most satisfactory note, so when HBO finally released A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, many fans found themselves more enamored with the latest spinoff despite its limited scope and settings.
With such a successful first season, the Dunk and Egg series has become a formidable foil to House of the Dragon; it’s no surprise the pressure is mounting, as fans now expect the Targaryen civil war show to match the heart and character depth of the smaller franchise.
Here are some of the ways Season 3 can reclaim its throne and finally deliver the fire and blood we have always wanted to see:

We’ve had enough of council meetings and long-winded dialogues in the past season, so it’s time to move away from the castle and into the heart of the battlefield. House of the Dragon Season 3 needs to fully embrace the Targaryen civil war this time.
The character study in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms worked so well because it’s only focused on one hedge knight’s journey. We’ve had that slow-burn character work in the past two seasons of House of the Dragon, so it’s high time we get into the massive and bloody warfare that the show was meant to deliver.
2 Shift the Focus of The Iron Throne Rivalry to Rhaenyra & Aegon II

Who’s fighting for the Iron Throne again? When the spinoff series started, it was clear that the fractured friendship between Rhaenyra and Alicent played a huge role in the Dance of the Dragons. It seems like the show keeps holding on to the nostalgia of the past and never really highlights Rhaenyra and Aegon II’s rivalry.
Helaena’s prophecy revealed that Aegon will be king again, so we need to see stronger convictions between the two commanders of the war. It’s time we shift the lens to Rhaenyra and Aegon and show the viewers how their decisions effectively seal their own ruin.
3 HOTD Needs to Improve Daemon Targaryen’s Storyline In Season 3

If there’s one major misstep House of the Dragon made last season, it’s trapping Daemon inside Harrenhal for god knows how many episodes. When you have a crowd-favorite character singlehandedly carrying the series, the most logical thing to do is to capitalize on him.
Season 3 needs to see the Rogue Prince in action, riding Caraxes into battle, and slaying enemies. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms relied on the steady moral compass of Ser Duncan the Tall, and that proved to be a winning formula for the series. House of the Dragon should now bring back its most volatile character into the fold.
4 Dance of the Dragons Can Give Us The Most Spectacular Sky Battle

The presence of dragons is one of House of the Dragon’s greatest advantages over A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, yet the smaller spinoff captured the spirit of Westeros more effectively, even without a single dragon on screen.
It’s time the first prequel series makes use of its legendary creatures as active participants in the war. It’s called Dance of the Dragons for a reason—we need to see more epic sky battles in Season 3. That’s how it can redeem itself from the stagnant, action-less pacing of the previous chapter.
5 Improve the Pacing & Lessen Changes From The Source Material

Pacing has been an issue of House of the Dragon since the very beginning, but this can be easily resolved if the story is streamlined and the source material is followed faithfully. It’s understandable that the writers had to fill in certain narrative gaps, but so far, those non-canon additions have been frustrating.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was widely praised for bringing George R.R. Martin’s vision to life in the most authentic way possible. House of the Dragon could learn from this and, from now on, strive to adhere more closely to the established history.
6 Explore the Consequences of Hiring Dragonseeds as Dragonriders

One of the highlights of Season 2 was the Blacks’ reckless decision to take in dragonseeds and give them the privilege of riding dragons out of desperation in winning the war. This upcoming saga will show us the repercussions of it, and we’re expecting to see more character depth in Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White.
Both characters played a huge part in the Dance of the Dragons, where they will go down in history as the Two Betrayers. Will the series follow the same path? We hope so! The sowing of the seeds had a significant amount of screen time, so it’s only fitting that we get more out of this storyline.
7 Make Every Major Character’s Death Leave a Scar on the Audience

The world of Game of Thrones is infamous for killing off beloved major characters, but so far, we haven’t had that many devastating send-offs in House of the Dragon. Even A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms broke us to pieces when Prince Baelor died after the Trial of Seven, so what’s stopping House of the Dragon from delivering a similar gut-punch death that lingers long after the episode ends?
Those who have read Fire & Blood know that an important character will perish during the Battle of the Gullet, and this is the show’s chance to go big and make it count.
8 Produce At Least One Shocking & Viral Trial of Seven-Level Moment

Can you name any scene from House of the Dragon that went viral because of a shocking plot twist or a major death? While the series has delivered several visceral sequences that got us all in a chokehold, none have yet matched the emotional grip of the Trial of Seven or the cultural impact of Red Wedding.
The spinoff needs to produce something that would last forever, even when the series has finally ended. For Season 3 to surpass its predecessor, it must lean into the most brutal chapters of the Fire & Blood lore.
9 Cover All Important Battles In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood
Fire & Blood / Credits: HarperVoyagerRyan Condal promised us four major events for Season 3, but spectacle alone cannot sustain the story. For a season with only eight episodes, this will be a huge challenge. What’s even tougher is how they will maintain the consistency of the plot, knowing there are smaller yet significant skirmishes that also happened in between these massive encounters.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was able to touch every corner of The Hedge Knight’s plot because of its intentional storytelling. House of the Dragon can do the same by focusing on the central conflict of the Targaryen civil war, ensuring that screen time is spent on character-defining arcs rather than non-canon subplots.
10 Exploit The Big-Budget Scale: Deliver Spectacle, Substance & Soul

House of the Dragon essentially has a bigger budget than A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, so why is it skimping on the money and even cutting episodes? A large-scale fantasy franchise like this needs to live up to its name by delivering a consistent, high-octane cinematic experience that fans expect from the world of Westeros.
More than just stunning visuals, it needs to improve its narrative by infusing real heart and soul—the way A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms humanized every character beyond their role in the plot. The audience shouldn’t just witness the war; they should feel invested in it and find compelling reasons to care who wins.
