The violent confrontation shows one of the servicemen standing in the middle of a group of men essentially holding the American captive, chanting “Yankee, go home” as one of the assailants puts a sack around the victim’s head.

When another serviceman ran to help, protesters threw punches at him.

The men responsible for the attack were members of the Turkish Youth Union, which is affiliated with the Patriotic Party, a small, nationalist political party without parliament seats, the Associated Press reported, citing the Anadolu news agency.

“The U.S. soldiers who carry the blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians on their hands cannot pollute our country,” the group said on X.

Turkish authorities detained 15 members of the anti-American youth organization.

The U.S. Embassy confirmed the incident, adding that the service members from the USS Wasp were “now safe.”
