Prince William and Prince Harry could find themselves sharing a significant family occasion next year, with Princess Diana’s 30th death anniversary providing a possible setting for a reunion neither brother appears ready to pursue through a joint television project.

Harry is considering a documentary about his mother, while William has reportedly declined opportunities to participate in separate programs.

Now, a proposed thanksgiving service could offer a different route, with King Charles reportedly raising no objection to an event that could bring his sons together.

The proposed gathering would center on Diana rather than either brother’s individual projects. According to a report from the Daily Mail, a thanksgiving service around August 31, 2027, is being seriously considered for the 30th anniversary of her death.

King Charles has reportedly “raised no objection” to the idea, which could follow the format of the service held for Diana’s 10th anniversary in 2007 at Wellington Barracks’ Guards’ Chapel.

That 2007 ceremony included the late Princess of Wales’ favorite music, while Harry delivered a eulogy.

The Royal Family’s official account of the service records that both William and Harry gave readings and helped oversee the arrangements with Diana’s siblings.

Meanwhile, a source has revealed that the proposed 2027 service could allow William to honor his mother without joining a television production connected to Harry.

“This would be an inspirational way to remember Diana,” the source said. The insider suggested William could participate by giving a reading, adding that such an appearance could “bring the brothers together.”

The possible service comes as Harry explores his own way of marking the anniversary. His spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Mail that the Duke has discussed several possible projects, including a documentary, while stressing that no project had been finalized.

“Nothing has been finalised or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour his mother’s legacy during this important anniversary year,” they explained.

The documentary could potentially be produced through Archewell Productions, Harry and Meghan’s company, which has a first-look agreement with Netflix.

Harry has also reportedly approached some of Diana’s friends and relatives about participating in a commemorative project.

William, meanwhile, has reportedly been approached about appearing in programs connected to Diana’s anniversary but has declined.

According to reports, he does not want to revisit the joint-documentary approach used for the 20th anniversary in 2017, when William and Harry appeared together in “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.”

William And Harry Have Barely Shared Public Space In Recent Years

A joint Diana service would also stand out because the brothers’ recent public appearances together have been extremely limited.

Their last known shared event was the 2024 funeral of their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, Diana’s brother-in-law, in Norfolk. Reports at the time said William and Harry were present but did not speak to each other.

Their previous major joint appearance came at the July 2021 unveiling of Diana’s statue in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace.

The event marked what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday and took place four months after Harry and Meghan’s televised interview with Oprah Winfrey.

They stood together for the ceremony, although their interactions appeared formal.

Princess Diana’s Charity Is One Of The Last Links Between William And Harry

A Diana-centered event could potentially bring Prince William and Prince Harry together, but their mother’s charity has already been one of the few organizations keeping a connection between the brothers alive.

The Diana Award is the only charity established in Princess Diana’s memory, and both William and Harry have continued to support it despite their estrangement.

The brothers have increasingly handled their involvement separately. According to royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths, they have effectively taken turns hosting or appearing at Diana Award events, with William involved one year and Harry the next.

That arrangement faced an unexpected setback when a major fundraising dinner for The Diana Award, scheduled for September 18, was canceled just over two weeks before it was due to take place.

Harry had reportedly been expected at the high-profile black-tie event after William participated in a Diana Award panel in June.

As Instyle reported, Griffiths said the organization had to “walk a very fine line between Harry and William” while “not wanting to upset William.” She also suggested there had been “wrangling behind the scenes.”

That connection to Princess Diana’s legacy also reaches back to one of the most painful moments William and Harry experienced together: their mother’s funeral in 1997.

In September, The Guardian reported that details from their uncle Charles Spencer’s memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” revisited the decision that put the two young princes behind Diana’s coffin during the funeral procession.

Spencer wrote that he objected when he was told William, then 15, and Harry, then 12, would walk behind their mother’s coffin. He said he believed Diana would not have wanted her sons to take part in the procession in that way.

According to Spencer’s account, he told a senior palace aide, “That’s not going to happen.” Then-Prince Charles later contacted him and insisted the boys participate.

The princes ultimately walked behind Diana’s coffin, alongside Spencer, their father, and other members of the royal family.
