After impressing with three goals and two assists in Switzerland’s first four games at the World Cup, Johan Manzambi was forced to miss his side’s last-16 penalty shootout victory over Colombia.
The SC Freiburg midfielder suffered a knee injury in training that head coach Murat Yakin hopes he can recover from in time to feature in Sunday’s quarter-final against Argentina.
“I can’t say whether it would be medically advisable. Of course, we have hope, but only if it makes sense and there are no risks involved," Yakin was quoted as saying by Swiss outlet Blick.
The 51-year-old also highlighted how much Switzerland missed Manzambi against Colombia.
“His absence was a shock for all of us; we all suffered. As a coach, you want your best player at the moment on the pitch.”
