She would go on to become one of the most legendary pop cultural icons in history.

Houston had reportedly been accused of d*ug use multiple times. The singer’s public appearance at Michael Jackson’s tribute concert in 2001, her thin appearance was reportedly speculated heavily by the tabloid press at the time, with many accusing her of having a dr*g habit (via ABC News).

When asked in an interview, she admitted to having partied a lot. Denying that her physical appearance was a cause for any health scare, Houston told ABC News’ Diane Sawyer at the time that she did consume alcohol and recreational d*ugs, but denied using crack. She said,

I partied a lot. Trust me: I partied my tail off. You get to a point where you know the party’s over…Crack is cheap. I make too much for me to ever smoke crack. Let’s get that straight, OK? I don’t do crack. I don’t do that. Crack is whack.

The comment was reportedly extremely controversial at the time, with the statement being perceived as an admission to using substances and a cry for help. The singer also revealed that performing music was not as fun for her anymore.

But the most infamous part was her revelation about her d*ug use.

Many close ones of the singer had expressed their regret at making her do the interview at the time. The singer sat with Diane Sawyer to promote her then-upcoming album Just Whitney, and made many revelations about the controversies surrounding her at the time. Brown would later speak to ET, saying that she should not have been on TV at the time.

[We] both needed to get away from what we were doing. There was no reason for her to be on television, at that time.

Record executive L.A. Reid also mentioned that he felt that he failed Whitney Houston when he made her sit with ABC News for the interview.
