At least two people are injured, with one in grave condition, law enforcement officials told NBC News.

The shooting took place around 6 p.m. near 17th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the Secret Service told Fox News.

A gunman armed with a pistol opened fire, engaging with Secret Service, Fox News reported. The suspect reportedly fired three shots towards the White Hosue and Secret Service agents returned fire.

A civilian on a nearby street was reportedly shot in the exchange of gunfire. That individual’s condition is unknown, Fox News Chief congressional correspondent Chad Pergram noted.

At least 30 gunshots were reportedly heard in the direction of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Reports suggest the shooter never got near the White House grounds.

On social media site X, the Secret Service said it was aware of shots being fired and they are “working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground.”
