A motorcyclist who allegedly fled the scene of a crash in Richmond Hill was taken down by a cop in a move worthy of the NFL.

Video of the officer sneaking up behind the stopped motorist to tackle him off his bike was posted by York Regional Police on its social media account on Monday, garnering more than 7,000 likes in the first two hours since it was shared on Instagram.

Dashcam footage of the incident, which happened on Aug. 9, shows the officer talking to another cop on a police radio while driving to track down the motorcyclist, whom he said drove off from the scene of a collision.

“I yelled at him to pull over and try to exchange information and then I motioned my finger to him towards the parking lot. And then he raised his finger towards me and did the motion of, ‘no,’ and then continued driving eastbound,” the cop says.

‘Looks like he’s trying to taunt us’

The video then cuts to footage in which the officer spots the motorcyclist 10 minutes later at the intersection of 16th Ave. and Mural St.

“It looks like he’s trying to taunt us,” another officer tells the cop in the police cruiser.

The cop pulls over his vehicle with the dashcam still showing the motorcyclist stopped at the intersection, waiting to make a right turn.

The officer then quickly but cautiously walks toward the man and charges at him, knocking him and his bike to the ground.

“Get off the bike,” the cop says.

The officer makes quick work of getting the motorcyclist to lie prone, then putting handcuffs on the man.

“You could say our officers are happy the NFL is back,” police joked in the video’s caption.

“Some are clearly looking for a tryout to play defence,” the post added, noting the cop’s “beautiful form tackle with a blindside approach” was a manoeuvre that even Los Angles Rams star linebacker “Myles ‘Flash’ Garrett would be proud of.”

A few social media users agreed with one commenting, “I should have this cop on my NFL fantasy pool. It was a great sack! Well done officer!”

Another person chimed in with: “Blue 42, Blue 42. Take this officer to the league. @nfl Someone has to be looking for a tight end!”

Police said the unidentified driver was charged with several driving offences, including failure to stop after an accident, flight from a peace officer and driving with no insurance.
