After a long spell on the sidelines, Victor Boniface returned to team training with Werder Bremen at the beginning of this month, but the 25-year-old is still waiting to make his comeback to competitive action.

On Saturday, he was left out of the squad that beat Hamburger SV 3-1 due to illness, Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune revealed after the win.

“Victor Boniface has had an infection for the past three days, which is why he wasn’t on the pitch today and also didn’t take part yesterday,” Thioune said.

The Bayer Leverkusen loanee hasn't featured for Werder since the start of December.

In total, Boniface has made 11 appearances for Werder this season without scoring.
