“We have made an arrest in this murder, but the investigation is ongoing and we continue to gather evidence,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.
“Whoever was in this vehicle may have important information about the murder, and we’re asking them come forward.”
Kakiuchi was killed in the early hours of June 5 after being stabbed during an altercation near Main Street and Union Street.
He was discovered shortly before 3:30 a.m. The VPD launched an investigation, which resulted in the arrest of Timothy Isborn.
Isborn was charged on June 11 with second-degree murder.
Investigators have yet to identify the occupants of an SUV that was seen traveling through the area before the homicide.
The video shows a dark SUV travelling south on Main Street at 2:30 a.m. It stops at a red light at Union Street. The vehicle then turned right and drove over the Dunsmuir Viaduct toward downtown.
The occupants of the car, or anyone with information, are asked to contact Vancouver Police Homicide at 604-717-2500.
Police have said Kakiuchi and Isborn didn’t know each other but didn’t elaborate if there had been any interaction leading up to the attack.
According to Addison, Isborn previously lived in Alberta before moving to B.C. He has no criminal history in B.C. and isn’t known to Vancouver police.
Yoshihiro Tanabe, who worked with Kakiuchi at Hapa Izakaya’s former location in Coal Harbour, said he was warm and had a fun personality, and was a guitarist.
