The host city medical lead is a required role for FIFA World Cup 26. The person must be a local medical professional with strong local connections and experience in managing medical services for large events.
The City of Vancouver, which did the hiring, said it is unable to comment on the procurement because the notice of intent closes on Sept. 17, at which time it could comment.
Vu said he is not in a position to comment yet.
The host city medical lead’s duties include collaborating with the FIFA medical lead, stadium medical lead and public health system lead, ensuring services at all Vancouver FIFA sites including the stadium, fan festival, training sites, the airport, as well other sites.
The host city medical lead is also the liaison between the FIFA medical lead and provincial public health authorities, is responsible for ensuring services at B.C. Place and all Vancouver FIFA sites, and for developing and reviewing medical plans in conjunction with the host committee’s integrated safety and security unit.
Vu was honoured in 2019 with a public service medal from the Governor General for outstanding public service.
He was the driving force behind establishing the tactical emergency medical service program for the police departments in Vancouver and Abbotsford, as well as with the RCMP national emergency medical response team. The team is designed to train police to use life-saving medical care in situations too dangerous for paramedics.
