A visitor from the U.S. had a welcome-to-Canada lesson Thursday night when he was hit with a stunt-driving ticket for driving at 161 km/h on Highway 417 in the Moodie Drive area.
Police said the driver claimed he was unaware he was speeding.
The limit in that area is 100 km/h, which is what he thought he was travelling, according to the OPP. But his speedometer displays speeds and distances in miles, so a reading of 100 m.p.h. meant the car was travelling at about 161 km/h.
Which is what the radar gun measured.
“We have heard that explanation before,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi said diplomatically Friday.
The driver is facing a charge of stunt driving, which includes a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment.
And the driver still faces a minimum $2,000 fine and a one-year driving ban within Ontario upon conviction in court, Fathi confirmed.
