The north end of the Granville Street Bridge will reopen on Monday, with priority access for transit headed downtown.

The newly constructed, elevated roadway section of Granville Street, north of Pacific Street, replaces the former north ramps, Vancouver city staff said in a news release Friday.

Only transit vehicles, taxis, cyclists and local traffic are permitted to travel northbound through the intersection of Granville Street at Drake Street. Other vehicles will be directed to turn onto Drake Street.

Staff say this is to help provide faster and more reliable bus service into downtown.

Drivers travelling downtown can continue to use Seymour Street, the main northbound route from the Granville Bridge.

The blocks of Granville Street between Drake Street and Smithe Street will continue to be accessed by all vehicles from east-west streets, according to the city.

All vehicles can travel southbound through the intersection of Granville Street and Drake Street onto the bridge.

The Granville Connector is a $50 million project aimed at creating  a safer crossing for walking, rolling, and cycling.

Construction continues this fall with work expected to be complete by early 2025.

New traffic signals, signage and a car-free connection to the Arbutus Greenway at the south end of the bridge are also in the works.

The bridge and other downtown overpasses were initially designed to move high volumes of traffic into a freeway system that never came to fruition. The land where the loops currently sit are city-owned and a new elevated street network will allow for more housing to be built as well.
