Tornado warning issued for parts of Niagara Region

Severe thunderstorm could bring 'damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall,' Envirionment Canada says

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for parts of Niagara Region as a severe thunderstorm moved through the area on Sunday.

The advisory was issued just before 12:30 p.m. for St. Catharines-Grimsby-Northern Niagara Region as Environment Canada tracked a severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado and bring “damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall.”

“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” the national weather agency said, while urging people to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches.

If no shelter is available, Environment Canada advised that people should lie in a low spot and protect their head from flying debris.

Anyone out on the water when threatening weather approaches should return to shore and seek shelter, if possible, or move directly away from the path of the tornado, the agency said.

“Otherwise, wear your lifejacket, lie face down and protect your head,” it advised.

Rainfall warnings in Niagara and beyond

A yellow warning for rainfall was also issued at 3:47 a.m. on Sunday for Niagara Falls-Welland-Southern Niagara Region and St. Catharines-Grimsby-Northern Niagara Region.

Localized heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm was expected in those areas on Sunday morning and into the afternoon.

“Locations impacted by multiple thunderstorms are expected to receive rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm,” the agency said, noting the rain is expected to diminish from west to east later this afternoon.

Others areas across the province were also hit with yellow rainfall warnings, including cities such as Ottawa, Hamilton and Windsor.
