Tony Romo is trying to move on from his showdown with the cops!

The sports commentator’s camp has shared a crucial update about his operating while intoxicated (OWI) case with the cops as they set their sights on getting him back in the corporate world.

Tony Romo has now been issued three new citations stemming from his arrest in Milwaukee on July 23 that caused him to be placed on leave and have J.J. Watt assume his role on CBS.

The 46-year-old has taken responsibility for everything that went down about a month ago when he was pulled over and ultimately failed his sobriety test. According to his spokesperson, “Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved.”

The rep added that they were working with local authorities to bring the matter to an end, while also discussing the “next steps” with CBS. Romo’s arrest last month earned him a spot on CBS’s indefinite leave list, leaving him and his team scrambling to make a comeback.

As shared by TMZ, Romo’s latest citation now includes first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle.

The Former NFL Star Was Replaced By J.J. Watt Following The Incident

The network wasted no time in securing a suitable replacement for the sports commentator after he was placed on indefinite leave following the OWI incident. As reported by The Blast, Watt was slated to appear alongside broadcaster Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson to carry on with the show.

The move represented a massive change in Watt’s career, moving him from the CBS number 2 NFL broadcast team, giving him his biggest career opportunity since becoming a part of the CBS family. At the time, CBS did not indicate whether it could become a permanent role for Watt, nor did it confirm when Romo would return.

Watt’s rich resume and his retirement as one of the most decorated defensive players of his generation pitched him as a capable and suitable candidate for Romo’s position in case of succession.

The former Texans defensive end recorded 114.5 sacks during his time in Houston and finished his career with 120.5 after spending his final two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Clips from the former footballer’s arrest showed him telling cops he was just coming back from his grandparents’ home and a quick visit to the golf course, while insisting he did not take any alcohol.

He was subsequently ordered to perform a sobriety test, to which he insisted he must contact his attorney before agreeing to do anything. However, his suggestion seemed to be unwelcome by the cops, who handcuffed him and ferried him off the bridge.

Upon his arrival at the station, Romo admitted that none of the concussions he has suffered happened recently. He also declined a preliminary breath test, explaining that lawyers had previously advised him against taking one.

The former athlete, who is due to appear in court on September 21, also appeared surprised when officers said they could seek a warrant for chemical testing.

As shared by KLTV, the Cascades Country Club confirmed in an email that Romo had pulled out of the game, although the reason remained undisclosed. The timing of his withdrawal coincided with his OWI arrest, where he was slammed with a citation for refusing to cooperate with the authorities.

The club expressed its disappointment over Romo’s absence as he had been a familiar participant at the tournament over the years. In the 2025 edition, he opened with a 69 before shooting a 76 in the second round, although his combined score was not enough to make the cut, eventually barring him from proceeding into the later stage of the competition.

Another angle that caught fans’ curiosity was the alleged condescending action of the deputy at the scene of the arrest. While they did not excuse Romo for being intoxicated and acting impaired during the arrest, they did argue that the officer handled things in poor judgment.

Critics who followed the clips wondered why Romo was immediately asked to perform sobriety tests and also noted that his attempt to secure an attorney seemed to escalate the situation. Some internet users described the arrest as excessive and even demanded that disciplinary action be taken against the deputy.

Authorities pushed back against the narrative, insisting that the deputy had observed Romo with red, glassy eyes and also picked up the scent of alcohol on his breath. Officers reportedly found small bottles of liquor in his backpack, in addition to his poor performance during a sobriety test.
