A frightening security breach at the TODAY Show has triggered consequences extending far beyond the arrest of the man accused of storming the studio. 

While police have charged the suspect with multiple offenses following the alarming confrontation, the incident also cost a longtime security employee his job after questions emerged about how an unauthorized visitor managed to enter one of television’s most recognizable studios in broad daylight.

‘TODAY’ Show Security Breakdown Costs Employee His Job

The fallout from Thursday morning’s breach was almost immediate. According to TMZ, a security guard assigned to Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center was fired after an intruder allegedly gained access to the restricted area in the morning, when the “TODAY” hosts were off the air.

Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, who allegedly confronted anchor Craig Melvin before lunging at him while shouting a racial slur.

The New York Police Department later arrested Truelove on several charges, including hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass and harassment, Page Six reported.

Surveillance footage reviewed after the incident reportedly captured two guards stationed near the studio entrance. 

At one point, one employee briefly stepped away, while the other allegedly failed to notice Truelove slipping into the building unnoticed.

Officials have not publicly confirmed which guard was dismissed, although sources revealed the employee was well regarded by colleagues.

Inside The Frightening Confrontation With Craig Melvin

According to authorities, Truelove allegedly slipped into a restricted area of Rockefeller Center around 9 a.m. while searching for longtime weather anchor Al Roker. 

After wandering backstage near the dressing rooms and stairwell, he instead came face-to-face with Melvin, demanding to know Roker’s whereabouts. 

Police said he then allegedly lunged at the “TODAY” show co-anchor while shouting the N-word, prompting Melvin to immediately alert nearby security personnel. 

Officers quickly restrained the suspect before he could enter Studio 1A or disrupt the live broadcast, and he was taken into custody without further incident. 

Neither Melvin nor Roker was injured, and both returned to the air about 15 minutes later.

Melvin Shared An Update As ‘TODAY’ Addressed The Incident

Hours after the frightening security breach, Melvin took to Instagram to reassure concerned fans that he was unharmed. 

Sharing a text-only post, the 47-year-old wrote, “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.” 

His message was accompanied by NBC’s official statement addressing the incident. As EW reported, the statement confirmed that “there was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio” after “an individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A.” 

The network added that the person approached Melvin, “who alerted security,” before being detained by law enforcement “without further incident.” 

NBC also stressed that “there was no altercation, and no one was injured,” while emphasizing that it was cooperating with investigators and “reviewing the incident and our security protocols” to maintain a safe environment for employees, guests and visitors. 

‘TODAY’ Show Suspect Had A History Of Previous Encounters With Police

The investigation into the “TODAY” show security breach also brought renewed attention to Truelove’s criminal history. 

According to police records, the criminal had several encounters with authorities long before he allegedly entered NBC’s Rockefeller Center studios. 

In January 2026, Truelove was arrested on an assault charge, while police said he was arrested twice in May on allegations of criminal trespass and reckless endangerment. 

Authorities also linked him to five separate criminal mischief cases filed between July and September 2025, all involving damage to vehicles. 

Court records further show that he pleaded guilty in June 2026 to felony criminal mischief, receiving a six-month jail sentence, five years of probation and a $375 fine. 

In addition to that conviction, Truelove still has three pending New York cases, in which he has pleaded not guilty to charges including misdemeanor assault, reckless endangerment, criminal trespass on railroad property and trespassing. 

Years Before The ‘TODAY’ Incident, Truelove’s Daily Struggles Were Profiled

Long before his run-ins with the authorities, Truelove’s struggles were the subject of a 2023 Los Angeles Times profile that documented his day-to-day efforts to navigate Los Angeles County’s overwhelmed homelessness services system. 

According to the Daily Mail, the article followed Truelove after he arrived in California on a one-way ticket with hopes of launching a social media company, ambitions that quickly unraveled as he found himself living on the streets. 

Over several days, reporters chronicled his repeated attempts to secure shelter, mental health care and other assistance, while highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles and limited resources facing unhoused residents. 

The profile also noted that Truelove had been diagnosed with PTSD and a mood disorder and was trying to rebuild his life despite mounting setbacks.
