The frightening security situation that rocked the set of the talk show, with Craig Melvin being the primary target of an intruder attack, opens up another layer.

The controversy has resulted in the laying off of a longtime security guard with the studio after questions were left unanswered as to how an intruder gained access to the restricted area.

A routine “TODAY” show broadcast may have captured the intruder accused of barging into the studio and verbally attacking Melvin. As seen on footage from the June 16 show, the man believed to be 41-year-old Andrew Truelove was spotted lingering outside Rockefeller Center while Savannah Guthrie and Melvin delivered a news segment. 

According to investigators, minutes after being spotted outside, Truelove moved past security and infiltrated the studio. Law enforcement sources claim he was initially trying to find Al Roker, but after failing to locate him, he confronted Melvin and directed racist slurs toward the veteran broadcaster.

The suspect now faces multiple charges, including hate crime burglary, hate crime menacing, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment. He also reportedly has a prior criminal record in New York, having been convicted of a felony and several previous trespassing-related charges.

Melvin spoke about the incident on a June 17 broadcast, telling viewers that all individuals involved were safe. As reported by TMZ, the broadcaster and Roker were subsequently granted protective orders against the suspect.

The studio intrusion episode did not wrap up with charges and penalties; those within the premises tasked with the role of securing the space also caught the heat. A longtime security guard at Studio 1A in Rockefeller Center got axed after investigators concluded an examination on how the suspect gained access into the area.

As shared by The Blast, two security guards were seen in the surveillance footage manning the studio entrance just before the incident. Shortly, a security guard left his post, leaving behind the remaining officer, who also failed to notice what had just happened.

Although the identity of the fired employee has not been revealed, he has, however, held a solid record and reputation at the establishment, making his dismissal pretty shocking. Roker’s unavailability at the time Truelove broke into the studio led to his racial slur outburst against Melvin.

Truelove’s face may ring a bell to anyone familiar with a 2023 Los Angeles Times profile, which captured his struggles with homelessness and mental health after he relocated to California with hopes of kicking off a social media business.

The alleged intruder was disappointed with the sad outcome of an event that crushed his dreams, leaving him to find his way around an overwhelmed support system and psychiatric care. Truelove’s life took another drastic turn with a post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis and a mood disorder.

Truelove’s name subsequently made an increasing appearance in court records after he was arrested multiple times in 2025 and this year on allegations of assault and reckless endangerment. He was also slammed with claims of vandalism, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

Truelove later pled guilty to a felony criminal mischief charge, which resulted in six months in jail, five years’ probation and a $500 fine, according to court documents. He also faces a number of pending charges in New York, including assault, reckless endangerment and trespassing.

Melvin’s experience spurred a move on the part of the network to reassess its security parameters in cooperation with law enforcement agencies, who continue to investigate the incident. The Blast stated that the safety of employees, on-air talent, production team, and guests remains a top priority for NBC.

The network is now moving forward with the primary goal of preventing similar reoccurrence in the future by maintaining a secure environment across all facilities. As for Melvin and Roker, the duo broke their silence after reports of the incident filtered out.

Melvin expressed relief that everyone on the premises was safe, as no injuries were reported. He praised the police for quickly de-escalating the situation and assured the public of his cooperation with the investigation.

As for Roker, the incident has taken a positive turn on the relationship between the show’s staff and the audience because it is a one for all, all for one situation. “A really heartfelt thank you to all who reached out over the last 24 hours to check in on my brother, @craigmelvinnbc. We are both OK,” Roker stated on his Instagram.

Melvin and Roker clinched temporary restraining orders against Truelove on Friday, July 17, during his arraignment. The judge ordered that Truelove maintain a healthy distance from the anchors throughout the duration of the case.

The intruder arrived in court dressed in a white jumpsuit and handcuffs as he was ordered back to jail without bail following the hate crime allegations against him. Roker and Melvin joined “TODAY” in 1996 and 2012, respectively, with the former serving as the permanent weather anchor and show co-anchor, while the latter first joined as news anchor.

Melvin recently expanded his role as the main anchor of the flagship 7- 9 a.m. broadcast following Hoda Kotb’s exit. The fans have not wavered in their support for Melvin and Roker throughout this ordeal, sending their best wishes to the duo, reassuring them that love will win over hate every time.
