The X-Files gets the Lego treatment

Gillian Anderson says getting a Lego minifigure modelled after her is one of the high points in her career. The actress and her co-star on The X-Files, David Duchovny, have been immortalized as part of a new 1,478-piece set that pays tribute to the sci-fi show.

“It’s way at the top, I’d have to say. Definitely,” Anderson told Forbes, ranking the honour. “It was pretty cool when we ended up on a Mad Magazine cover. It was pretty cool when we ended up in a Simpsons episode — one of my favourites of all time. But I have to say that this is right up there with The Simpsons.”

Anderson and Duchovny played FBI special agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, respectively, on the original series that aired from 1993 to 2002. They revived their roles for a pair of movies and, later, two more seasons of the show starting in 2016.

The set is called Lego Ideas The X-Files (21369) and recreates Fox Mulder’s office, a forest clearing scene, and a hovering UFO. From The Lego Group and Disney Entertainment, and priced at CAD$269.99, it’ll be available through Lego Insiders Early Access starting Aug. 1. It’ll be released to the general public on Aug. 4 at Lego stores and Lego.ca/The-X-Files.

In statement on the Lego website, Anderson further raved about the set.

“The level of detail is brilliant — there are so many little nods that fans will absolutely recognize — and as a Lego fan myself, I love that people can now quite literally build their own X-Files moments at home,” she said.

Aside from the Mulder and Scully minifigures, there are six others for Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch, The Flukeman, and a grey alien. Other features include an “I Want to Believe” poster, an X-Files dossier, a “The Truth is Out There” tile, and pencils in the ceiling of Mulder’s office.

Australian fan designer Brent (WetWired) Waller, who also designed the Lego sets Seinfeld (21328) and Ghostbusters Ecto-1 (21108), came up with the build. He pitched it as part of the Lego Ideas ‘90s Nostalgia Challenge, which allows the community to vote on fan concepts before they become official Lego sets.

“I was obsessed with The X-Files from the moment I first saw it in the ‘90s,” Waller said in a statement on the Lego website.

“I originally built Mulder’s office back in 2014 while rewatching the series, and it grew from there as a personal project. I wanted to combine nostalgia, detail, and storytelling to capture the atmosphere of the show — from Mulder’s office to the forest and UFO encounter.”

The X-Files originally aired for nine seasons on Fox and was partially filmed in Vancouver.
