The Odyssey is one of the highly anticipated movies of the year, but it seems the production is attracting more criticism than hype. In a recent interview with Time, director Christopher Nolan addressed the controversial casting of rapper Travis Scott.
I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.
Fans have been split over the unexpected choice, as evident in the responses on social media. Indeed, it is very curious as to how Nolan came up with the idea of a crossover between blockbuster cinema and hip-hop culture, but one thing’s for sure: The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about releases in Hollywood.
Travis Scott’s Controversial Role In The Odyssey, Explained
Travis Scott / Credits: Charlamagne Tha God on YouTubeScott is not portraying a character pulled directly from Homer’s epic. Instead, he will be playing an original movie role—a mysterious bard-like storyteller. In the trailer, the rapper performs before Menelaus during a lavish banquet as he recounts the fall of Troy and the legend of the Trojan Horse.
This may be the biggest movie project so far in Scott’s career, who revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that while he may not have the same level of acting experience as his co-stars, he isn’t intimidated by the challenge.
These are just different aspects that I was intrigued and I was into, to be honest. I’m just into all things creative. I might not be the best in everything. That’s how I can respect working with other people in certain fields that I’m not so good in.
His role in the film, specially crafted by Nolan for the rapper, seemingly draws inspiration from the ancient oral poets who preserved Greek history through performance.
Scott’s character may serve as the film’s cinematic narrator who will establish Odysseus as a legendary figure long before his journey across the seas even begins.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Continues to Draw Online Backlash
Even before Scott’s casting controversy, the movie was already drawing flak after the release of its trailer. Many of the concerns point towards the use of modern accents and casual dialogue, which do not seemingly match the ancient Greek setting of the story.
The film’s overall historical accuracy was also put under scrutiny, especially the costumes, armor, and visuals, which looked more like fantasy than authentic ancient Greece. Here are some comments from fans:
THE DIALOGUE IS SHIT OMFG LOLOL
THEY DIDNT EVEN TRY
Historically inaccurate, tired retelling. Do something original. 🙄

The dialogue is really strange for this type of film.
The dialogue/vocabulary and the clean look of the movie much more like a post apocalyptic future where humanity evolved into a Neo-Greco-Roman inspired civilization, rather than a historical epic…
— Rino🚀 (@RinoTheBouncer) May 5, 2026While the movie is still weeks away from its release, the buzz surrounding Nolan’s upcoming project may work in its favor by increasing public interest and curiosity. Despite the online backlash and criticism, many fans remain excited to see Nolan’s unique interpretation of the classic story.
In the end, audiences will have to wait until the movie is released to fully judge whether The Odyssey lives up to the high expectations.
