In a post shared to Instagram on Wednesday, The Morissey Pub owner Jordan Kendall shared the “difficult news” that the late-night bar located at 1227 Granville St. will be permanently closing its doors next month.

“For the last 10 months, I’ve negotiated in good faith for a new lease, hoping to secure another decade for this space,” Kendall shared. “Unfortunately, it has become clear that the opportunity to stay was never truly on the table. It is heartbreaking to see 26 years of community history sidelined by behind-the-scenes negotiations and a six-figure pricetag just for a seat at the table.”

A popular place for games, live music and sports nights over the past two-plus decades, The Morrissey’s legacy, he says, will live on despite the closure.

“It’s not all sadness,” Kendall shared. “It has been a great honour, and I have loved every minute that I got to carry the torch first lit by the Douglas brothers in 1999.”

Noting they have no plans to go out quietly, Kendall shared that the pub’s regular programming will continue through its last day of service on May 23.

“We’re going to celebrate on our way out the door with some great nights ahead,” Kendall shared. “Thank you to our staff, our regulars and everyone that has been a part of our success over the years.”

Opened in 1999 as part of a broader revitalization initiative on the Granville Street corridor, the strip would go on to become a primary hub for nightlife in the downtown core, although not without its issues. In an effort to again revamp the area, the city approved a 20-year plan in 2025 with the goal of making Granville Street ‘thrive again.’

The Morrissey Pub is one of a growing number of local restaurants and pubs to announce their pending or completed closure in recent months for reasons ranging from commercial real estate issues to the cost of doing business, including MeeT in Yaletown, Bacaro at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, and Gringo.
