Black Myth Wukong has been released for the past few weeks and lived up to the hype and expectations of the gaming community. The game was developed by a group of independent developers from Game Science, and it was fitting for a Chinese gaming studio to bring forth an original tale about their respective mythology and showcase the different deities and their culture. Feng Ji founded the studio nearly a decade ago and his story of building a company from the ground up is an unusual tale of circumstance and luck.

Feng Ji was no different from gamers today, and his addiction to the World of Warcraft set him off on a journey. Ji’s love for video games allowed him to make a name for himself in the gaming industry and the rest was history.

Black Myth Wukong Would Have Never Been Made if the CEO of Game Science Didn’t Take Risks

Game development can take years to perfect, and the developers of Game Science didn’t falter under the pressure of the gaming community. Black Myth Wukong shattered records on the PC platform and had a successful launch day. This game was a passion project for Game Science founder Feng Ji, and his story could be used as inspiration for up-and-coming game developers aspiring to achieve similar greatness or a cautionary tale for parents to use on their youngsters and convince them to stay in school.

Not everyone has the same privileges or access to nice things. Feng Ji had the opportunity to go to a nice grad school to continue his studies and pursue a much more lucrative career but ultimately took control of his destiny. Ji was a fan of the World of Warcraft franchise, pointing him in the right direction, culminating his years living in internet cafes as Black Myth Wukong.

Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science, was your typical gaming addict. His journey started with World of Warcraft in 2005.

In 2005, he gave up grad school, lived in internet cafes, and borrowed money to fuel his gaming addiction.

All those years of borrowing money to sustain his gaming addiction were somehow worth it. It was a gamble to trade in the potential of living a comfortable life by completing grad school but Ji wouldn’t budge and allowed his passion for gaming to dictate his life choices that led him to where he is today. Black Myth Wukong made $700 million, which is an impressive feat in the first two weeks, especially for an independent game developer, and this will be Ji’s legacy.

Ji did not make a contingency plan if his career in game development did not pan out the way he anticipated. The Chinese game developer was locked in and committed to seeing his creative vision all through and it paid off. The gaming community now knows what Game Science is capable of and could encourage Ji and his colleagues to pursue more ambitious games for years.

The developers confirmed an expansion is coming and they can take it further by developing a new standalone project featuring other deities. Black Myth Wukong was a nice change of pace and offered a similar yet harrowing combat experience akin to the Soulslike genre but with Chinese mythology as the backdrop. There are more fascinating deities that could lead their solo projects if Ji chooses to pursue this path.

Ji’s love for gaming encouraged him to make a game that left a lasting impact on the gaming industry. Players are now being exposed to Chinese mythology in the best way possible for cultural representation giving them an experience worth remembering.

The success of Black Myth Wukong could usher in a new era of video games. Ji started as a simple gamer and traded in his future of potential greatness for something else, and it wasn’t a bad bargain; perhaps other aspiring developers will take inspiration from his humble beginnings.

Game Science has struck gold with this project and there is no telling what the future holds for the studio. Ji has made a name for himself and started as a designer, and it was an interesting journey to look back at retrospect, proving greatness can come from small beginnings.
