Twice: The Villain Whose Tragic Past Led Him to Darkness in My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia‘s resemblance to superhero genres, similar to Marvel and DC, played a vital role in its success. With all the pieces coming together at the end of the final saga, many fans’ perspectives on morality were challenged.

Twice was the perfect character for Horikoshi to narrate how society’s influence can greatly impact a person’s character. The mangaka introduced Jin as an orphan who was suffering from isolation at an early stage. Besides all the traumatic experiences, Twice was gifted with a powerful quirk. A lot of anime watchers even resembled Naruto‘s Shadow Clone Jutsu after witnessing Jin’s quirk on the screen.

However, unlike Naruto, Twice’s quirk put a lot of psychological toll on his body. This led him to suffer from several issues, like identity crises and mental breakdowns. After losing both his parents in a villain attack, Jin went into a stage of isolation where he would only rely on his clones for companionship. Although he was trying his best to keep up with society’s mistreatment, his solitary state only pushed him more to the edge.

Unfortunately, Jin witnessed all his companions (clones) murder each other while being tied to a chair. This traumatic experience served as a breaking point for Twice and uncertainty of his real identity. Despite all the depressing events, Jin managed to find hope by joining the League of Villains.

As all the villains made Twice comfortable in his skin, his desperation to make friends and quit isolation was over. However, everything turns south when Jin learns about Hawk’s betrayal in Season 6 Episode 3. After becoming close to Hawks and unknowingly acting as his informant, Twice lost his sanity by the revelation of another betrayal.

Undoubtedly, Hawks and the heroes were only able to infiltrate the Villains’ hideout by gaining Twice’s trust. This led Jin to blame himself for the Hawk’s betrayal and a tragic showdown between the two. This rollercoaster ride of emotions made several fans sympathize with the villain and turn them against the mangaka for poor character design.
