Tearful Schuster hails Freiburg fans after historic night

Julian Schuster reflected on SC Freiburg’s achievement of reaching a first European final.

SC Freiburg tied Sevilla’s record of 11 successive home wins in the Europa League as their latest victory over SC Braga booked them a first-ever continental final. Julian Schuster was very emotional as fans stormed the pitch after the final whistle.

"I just feel incredibly great joy when I look into people's faces,” said Schuster after the game as he struggled to hold his joyful tears. “That's what prevails, and what will remain for all eternity for all of us,"

Schuster managed a fifth-place Bundesliga finish in his debut season, and Freiburg reached the DFB-Pokal semi-final and Europa League final this campaign. The young coach was seen celebrating with some fans after the pitch invasion.

"The most important thing in such moments is to know exactly who you are. That's a point that's very important to me. This simply characterizes the people here in the region.” added the head coach as he emphasized the role of the supporters in this historic run. Freiburg will face Aston Villa in Istanbul on May 20th.
