"Still very surreal!" - Germany call-up from Klopp gave Scherhant another push

Jürgen Klopp’s first Germany squad has already given several of his new faces an extra boost. Freiburg winger Derry Scherhant was among those to impress for his club at the weekend after receiving his maiden call-up, while Jamal Musiala has also praised the new head coach’s energy.

Jürgen Klopp’s arrival as Germany head coach appears to have given several of his new international faces an additional boost even before they have played their first game for the national team.

Klopp selected an unusually large squad of 44 players for his first international window, including a number of potential debutants. Several of those players impressed for their clubs over the weekend.

One of them was Freiburg winger Derry Scherhant, who played a key role in his side’s 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 23-year-old admitted that receiving his first Germany call-up had given him an extra motivation.

“I couldn't really realise it. It feels very, very surreal somehow. I think it gave me another push today,” Scherhant said after the match.

Scherhant is one of four Freiburg players included in Klopp’s first Germany squad, alongside Philipp Treu, Max Rosenfelder and Yannik Engelhardt.

Klopp had stressed when announcing his squad that performances would remain the key factor in his selection process.

“Everything depends on performance. It’s about being ready for the next game and giving the feeling that it means everything to me to play now,” the new Germany coach said.

The new atmosphere has also been noticed by established players. Jamal Musiala, who scored and completed 90 minutes for Bayern Munich at the weekend, spoke positively about his early conversations with Klopp.

“I have talked a lot with him. The vibes and the energy are great,” Musiala said.

Klopp will now bring his first group of players together as Germany prepare for four Nations League matches, with the new coach aiming to build a squad capable of challenging at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.

At the same time, Klopp has stressed that the door remains open for players who were not selected this time. Among them is Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav, who admitted he was disappointed by his omission but vowed to continue fighting for a place in the squad
