Simone Biles Is Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson Of 2024
The Sportsperson of the Year award has been one that’s been awarded since 1954. It’s “one of the most prestigious honors in all of sports,” according to a press release from Sports Illustrated.
11-time Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, 27, was named SI’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, marking the first Olympian to be recognized for this award since LeBron James in 2012 when he led the U.S. men’s basketball team to gold at the London Games.

According to Sports Illustrated, “Simone Biles is Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year because she won gold, and then another gold, and then another; because she changed the face of her sport and the conversations around athletes in general; because she continues to speak out about issues that matter to her. And perhaps most of all because after she wondered aloud to Chiles whether she was about to relive the darkest period of her career, she took a deep breath, she saluted the judges and she broke into a run.”
Simone Biles Isn't A Fan Of The 'Limelight'
During her acceptance speech, Biles explained that she isn't a fan of being in the "limelight" but "it tends to happen to me a lot."
"Trust me when I tell you I'd rather be competing on a four-inch beam in front of you guys," she joked. "I'm going to keep it short and sweet. Thank you, Sports Illustrated, for this incredible honor. I'm truly excited to be up here."
Biles explained that she was excited that Aly Raisman was the one who presented the award to her, and that she shares this award with her family and friends.
"People think of gymnastics as an individual sport, but I wouldn't be here without my team," she said after she shouted out her coaches. "To my husband, Jonathan, thank you for being with me through the highs and the lows and always being by my side no matter what."

She also had a message for all the "little ones out there." Biles said, "Stay engaged and stay active because lessons learned through individual or team sports is something you can carry on through the rest of your life. No matter what life may throw at you along your journey, be the best person you can be, follow your passion, and put in the work, and you know that I see the gold within all of you."
Before closing out her speech, she recognized that 2024 "was a big year for women's sports" and said she wanted to remind everyone that "it's not limited to once every four years, so continue to invest and support all women's sports at all levels."
Just before the ceremony while on the red carpet, Biles shared a message for the younger generation of athletes with The Blast.
"Never give up. Whatever you put your mind to, you can accomplish it," she said. "Because whenever I started, I just wanted to maybe do college gymnastics and look at where we are now."
