A 28-year-old Scottish woman says macromastia, a rare medical condition that sees breasts become excessively large, is causing her chronic pain and affects her sleep.

Summer Robert says she struggles to do daily tasks and chores while needing a 30U bra size to support her 27-kilogram chest.

Her breasts began to grow when she was just seven years old, and she started wearing a C-cup by age eight. In her mid-20s, her breasts grew 11 sizes, almost one size a month.

“I didn’t get diagnosed until four years ago here, and then I went to America to get diagnosed and told more about it,” Robert said Monday during an interview with Britain’s ITV.

“The told me it was all hormone based. Micromastia is all to do with your hormones.”

Going through puberty

Robert, who is under 5 feet, said she sought help from doctors during her teenage years to deal with the condition, including the possibility of undergoing breast reduction surgery. However, physicians told her she was going through puberty and the condition was not serious.

“I was trying to get reductions from when I was 14, and they would tell me that by BMI is too high because my boobs weigh so much, and they were basically saying that I was overweight,” she said.

To deal with her excessively large chest, Robert said she has had to import bras and guesses that the condition has cost her as much as £125,000 a year (C$233,800).

Robert was featured on TLC’s Most Extreme Humans this summer, which included a visit to a U.S. doctor about her options for reducing the size of her chest through surgery.

Since there is very little research into the condition, Robert says she understands if she gets reduction surgery that there is still a chance her breasts will continue to grow.

Endures regular harassment

Because of her appearance, Roberts said she has had to deal with strangers commenting while out in public and regular harassment. In one instance, she was asked to leave an establishment amid accusations of being improperly dressed.

“I just go through those struggles daily — people thinking that I want to show off my boobs and I want the attention,” Robert told People earlier this year.

“I’m just like, ‘I’m just trying to exist, literally, and I just have big boobs.’ I can wear clothes that are ugly and I’m still going to get harassed and catcalled.”

Two years ago, Robert turned her condition into an opportunity by pivoting to creating content on OnlyFans.

Seeking clothing that fits

Meanwhile, the biggest challenge for her is finding clothing that fits and can stretch, including dresses. She hopes getting clothing tailored will help, but is usually left disappointed.

“Nine times out of 10, it will still not fit,” she said. “It’s just day-to-day things that you would think are so easy, it’s so difficult.”

To deal with the pain, she wears a back brace to alleviate the constant pressure on her neck, shoulders, back and chest wall. She also has difficulty trying to sleep.

Meanwhile, physical exercise is out of the question.

“I’ve never gone to the gym,” she said.
