Oscar winner reflects on the painful period surrounding her 2010 divorce and protecting her newborn son from paparazzi

Sandra Bullock is opening up about one of the darkest chapters of her life — the end of her marriage to Jesse James and the cheating scandal that blew it apart.

Speaking to Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, the Oscar winner reflected on the pain she was carrying while filming Gravity in 2013, calling the movie her “most meaningful” experience because its story mirrored what she was going through.

‘Dark time in my life’

“It was during a really dark time in my life,” Bullock said. “I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it.”

Bullock played astronaut Ryan Stone, who becomes stranded in space after a disastrous mission with George Clooney’s character. For Bullock, the isolation hit close to home.

“Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking,” she said.

‘Yeah, I did cheat on my wife’

Bullock and James married in July 2005 and finalized their divorce in June 2010, according to Entertainment Weekly. That year, multiple women came forward claiming they had affairs with James, per Us Weekly. James publicly admitted to cheating and later went to a treatment facility after the breakup, Page Six reports.

James apologized at the time, but in a 2017 interview with the Daily Mail, he dismissed the scandal as something that was simply part of his life.

“Yeah, I did cheat on my wife, yeah, I stood up and took accountability for it and apologized,” he said. “And that’s end of story … It’s part of life.”

Aftermath of cheating scandal

Bullock has rarely spoken publicly about the scandal. But in the Interview conversation, she offered a glimpse into just how chaotic things became.

Her son Louis had been born through adoption at the end of 2009, just months before the scandal erupted. With paparazzi closing in, Bullock said she was desperate to protect her newborn’s privacy.

“I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn,” she recalled.

“I put him in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag and zipped the hockey bag around him,” she said. “Then I carried the hockey bag to the car, as though I was just carrying any random hockey bag.”

Bullock joked that protecting her children from the spotlight has meant she has had to “operate like the CIA.”

“If you’re surrounded by good people, you’ll be fine,” she said. “But if people near you mean you harm, no matter how covert you are and how much pre-planning you do, your privacy is information that brings them cash.”

She revealed that this happened to her “recently” as well, adding simply: “It broke my heart.”

Bullock later found love with Bryan Randall, whom she began dating in 2015. Randall died in August 2023 at 57 after a private three-year battle with ALS.

Last month, Bullock described caring for Randall while raising their children during the COVID-19 pandemic as a “huge weight,” calling that period a “trifecta that was pretty dark.”

Now, as she returns to the big screen in Practical Magic 2, Bullock says she’s tired and burnt out — but happier than ever.

“I feel like I need to take a big sojourn, some sort of dropping of luggage that no longer serves me,” she told Aniston.
