Late Rob Reiner‘s son, Nick Reiner, is reportedly struggling behind bars, as he continues to await trial in solitary confinement after his arrest as a suspect in the murder of his parents.
A close family source shared that the 32-year-old looks unrecognizable and is now acting in ways that are making it difficult for his lawyers to work with him.
This comes months after Nick Reiner’s siblings distanced themselves from the case, with reports confirming that they would no longer foot the bill for his defense.
Nick Reiner Is ‘Rapidly Deteriorating’ In Solitary Confinement, Family Source Reveals
Brent Perniac/AdMedia/Newscom/MEGASeven months after his high-profile arrest for the double-murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, Nick has reportedly become completely unrecognizable because of his grueling jail conditions.
“Nick no longer looks like Nick. He is rapidly deteriorating. No one would recognize him,” a source close to the family told the Daily Mail.
Explaining his alarming physical decline, the source said: “He is almost bald because they have to keep his hair super short to keep the bugs out, and he is super skinny because of the intense medication he is on. His eyes are very sunken in.”
Observers first noted the transformation in February when he appeared in court with a shaved head while wearing the brown outfit mandated for inmates in “mental observation housing.”
Tense and looking leaner, Nick maintained a gaunt stare throughout the proceeding where he fought the murder charges. The subsequent five months have seemingly worsened his condition, especially with a prolonged stay in a solitary unit in Los Angeles.
Rob Reiner’s Son Is Also Struggling Cognitively And Is Now ‘Babbling Like A Child’
ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGA Nick’s decline isn’t just physical, as the family source noted that he has also deteriorated cognitively while behind bars.
The suspected killer reportedly finds it hard to speak coherently and converse with his lawyers, making the defense team’s work much more difficult.
“Nick has not been well for many years, but before jail some of his personality could be recognized. Not now. He is like a babbling child, totally out of it,” the family source told the news outlet.
“It’s so bad his lawyers have a hard time talking to him,” the source added about Nick’s new struggles while in solitary confinement.
They continued, “Nick definitely has a cognitive decline. He is not all there. He doesn’t know what year it is or who is the president of the United States. He cannot process reality or focus.”
Nick Reiner’s Siblings Are Worried He Would Never Be ‘Sane’ Again
RCF / MEGA Despite his alleged act of murdering both his parents, Nick’s siblings are said to be concerned about his well-being and mental state in solitary confinement.
The insider close to the family shared that his older brother, Jake Reiner, and younger sister, Romy Reiner, “worry that he will never be sane again and that he could possibly die as his heart could weaken from the constant strain.”
An ex-inmate who was incarcerated at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in 2024 previously detailed the severe living conditions inside, describing an environment filled with non-stop shouting from morning until night.
They noted that the constant noise takes a heavy toll on a person’s mental stability, explaining that it “rocks your nervous system because it’s weird, like howling and all the profanity.”
The source also highlighted the facility’s consistently low temperatures as a major source of discomfort. They recalled that detainees are subjected to constant cold without any means to “crank up the thermostat or ask for a down comforter.”
This physical discomfort is further compounded by a stark lack of sunlight, leaving the housing units mostly dark.
The Alleged Killer’s Siblings Are No Longer Footing The Bill For His Defense
LuMarPHOTO / AFF-USA.COM / MEGA Back in February, TMZ reported that Jake and Romy had distanced themselves from their brother’s case and would no longer fund his legal bills.
The confirmation of their shocking move came after Nick’s legal representation underwent a major shift when top private defense lawyer Alan Jackson dropped the murder case in January.
Veteran public defender Kimberly Greene subsequently stepped in to handle the alleged killer’s representation.
At the time, there were expectations that Jake and Romy would secure another private legal representative for their brother; however, Greene will reportedly remain on the case, with a source telling the news outlet that “Nick’s defense is Nick’s defense. They’re not involved.”
Nick Reiner Is Trying To Gain Access To His Trust Fund
Brent Perniac/AdMedia/Newscom/MEGAWith Jake and Romy refusing to bankroll Nick’s legal bills, the alleged killer made a desperate bid to rehire a private attorney by filing a petition to unlock $1.5 million from a trust fund his parents set up for him back in 1993.
Nick argues that the money is legally his since he is past the mandatory payout age of 30. According to Variety, the probate petition noted that he “loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation.”
The 32-year-old reportedly still wants Jackson to lead his defense team, and the lawyer is said to be willing to return “if funds can be obtained.”
However, the petition noted that the estate trustee, Paul Kanin, has flatly refused to unlock the cash and has kept the money frozen due to ongoing “unresolved concerns” about Nick’s overall “capacity to make sound decisions and adequately protect his own interests” while behind bars.
This now leaves his entire legal defense in complete limbo as he waits in jail for his September 2026 trial.
