Rick Ross’ attorney brought up his client’s celebrity status while asking for a quick release from custody. The judge made it clear that fame would not change how she treated him. The rapper appeared by video before Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer on Thursday following his arrest on domestic violence-related battery charges. When his lawyer requested an expedited release for safety reasons, Glazer responded that she had “no idea” who Ross was. Ross has pleaded not guilty and maintains his innocence.
Rick Ross’ Lawyer Requests An Expedited Release
Spread Pictures / MEGAAttorney Steve Sadow identified Ross by his legal name, William Leonard Roberts II, while asking the judge to speed up his release. “Mr. Roberts is a celebrity. I don’t know to whatever degree Your Honor can, but I’d ask that his release be expedited,” Sadow said.
The attorney argued that a faster release would be in his client’s best interest. Glazer addressed Ross directly in her response. “Hi Mr. Roberts. I have no idea who you are, except as somebody here in the court who’s going to be treated fairly, just like everybody here,” she said.
Ross had been booked around 6:10 a.m. Thursday before making his video appearance. His bond was set at $4,000 for the felony battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor battery charge.
The Charges Stem From An Alleged August Confrontation
According to TMZ, the allegations concern an August 28 encounter at Ross’ Star Island home. His former girlfriend told police that Ross became angry about a photograph she had been tagged in on social media. She alleged that the disagreement escalated after he questioned her about another relationship.
The woman accused Ross of slapping her, hitting her multiple times, and choking her until she could not breathe. She also provided photographs of injuries she claimed were connected to the encounter. The report states that Ross voluntarily surrendered and declined to discuss the allegations with officers.
He faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. Both charges are domestic violence-related.

Rick Ross Maintains His Innocence
Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/MEGA Sadow said the accusation came from a former girlfriend and “was not reported to police until about a month after the alleged incident.” The alleged confrontation occurred on August 28, while the report to police was made on September 29.
The attorney said Ross maintains his innocence. The rapper has pleaded not guilty, and the accusations have not been proven in court. Glazer ordered Ross to surrender any firearms and concealed weapons and prohibited him from possessing firearms while the case is pending. He was also ordered not to engage in criminal activity or use illegal drugs.
Ross is scheduled to return to court for arraignment on Thursday, October 22.
The Rapper Previously Faced A Marijuana Possession Charge
Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency / MEGAThe latest case follows earlier arrests involving separate circumstances. In March 2011, police in Shreveport, Louisiana, responded to a complaint about the smell of marijuana coming from a room at a Hilton Hotel.
Officers searched the room and found one gram of a substance they believed was marijuana. According to CBS News, Ross received a misdemeanor summons and was released following the arrest.
An Outstanding Warrant Led To Another Arrest In 2014
Arroyo-OConnor / AFF-USA.com / MEGARoss was arrested again in June 2014, shortly after performing at the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina. The arrest stemmed from an outstanding warrant, not the performance. Billboard reported that Ross had allegedly failed to appear in court for a 2013 marijuana possession violation in North Carolina. He cooperated with police and posted bail.
In 2025, Ross made headlines over a separate financial matter involving an alleged five-figure debt to the State of Georgia. The Georgia Department of Revenue filed a state tax execution in late 2024 concerning taxes the rapper allegedly owed for previous years. The report followed coverage of Ross’ major purchases, including his $3.5 million cash deal for former NBA star Amare Stoudemire’s Florida mansion in 2021.
The current battery case remains pending, with Ross’ next court appearance scheduled for October 22.
