Pixar has been having quite the summer with Inside Out 2, bringing the animation juggernaut back into the limelight after what had been a lukewarm run with a slew of great films. However, it seems that 2024 is shaping up to be quite the brawl for animation giants, as DreamWorks is gearing up to release what seems to be the next animation event of the year.

Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot has been adapted by DreamWorks, with its release date right around the corner. Equal parts WALL-E and The Iron Giant, the film boasts a star-studded cast with heavy hitters like Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, and Bill Nighy. Given the talent that is behind the film and the critic’s score that it has managed to garner, it seems that The Wild Robot might be on its way to dethroning Inside Out 2 from earlier this year.

Critics have praised The Wild Robot, which follows a robot stuck in the wilderness. While the premise of the story is taken from that of a children’s book, it must be noted that DreamWorks has a knack for turning popular and niche children’s books (such as Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon) and turning them into some of the biggest animated cash cow franchises. Looking at the praise that is being poured over The Wild Robot, it seems that is also set to be the case with the film.

While a strong score from critics is not always indicative of good commercial success, the summer has been kind towards animated films, and The Wild Robot seems to be primed to capitalize on the renewed interest in animated films. With actors like Mark Hamill and Pedro Pascal helming the show, the film definitely has the star power to at least break even.

Inside Out 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time

Inside Out 2 || Pixar

Inside Out 2 was Pixar’s slam dunk after a lot of fans had written the animation giant off as being in its waning days. With commercial duds like Lightyear and Turning Red, Pixar was struggling slightly, with fans also not being very happy with the stories that were coming out of the animation juggernaut.

However, it seems Inside Out 2 has restored audiences’ faith in the company, slapping the company with a revenue of $1.675 billion, as reported by The Numbers. The film’s dominance at the box office has taken a lot of audiences by shock, but the film has smoothed things over for the company, giving them a roadmap of the way forward.

The Wild Robot hits theatres on September 27, 2024.
