The Senators placed skilled forward William Eklund on injured reserve before hosting the Nashville Predators at the Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday night, and the talk in National Hockey League circles was that he could be sidelined for more than eight weeks because of an ankle injury.

Head coach Travis Green had told reporters on Friday that Eklund would be out for “an extended period” after he crashed awkwardly into the boards while racing for a puck in season home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers, which the Senators won 2-1.

Green noted that Eklund, who was seen using a scooter for his left leg on Saturday as reporters headed into the dressing room, won’t require surgery.

A two-month timeline, if all goes well, means Eklund could return sometime before Christmas, possibly before the Senators head to Germany to face the Chicago Blackhawks in games on Dec. 18 and Dec. 20.

The Senators will take whatever time is necessary with Eklund’s recovery because ankle injuries can be tricky.

The Senators did have some good news on the injury front on Saturday, with winger Andre Burakovsky making his Ottawa debut after missing the first four games of the season with an unspecified ailment.

Acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in June, Burakovsky was expected to skate on a line with Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson. That was where Eklund started Thursday’s game against the Flyers.
