As One Piece heads towards its finale with full steam ahead, fans are dying to know which villain the Straw Hats will face in the Elbaf arc. Of course, a whole platoon of antagonists is lined up for Luffy to face, including Imu, Blackbeard, and the whole of the World Government.

But the one pirate who might actually face Luffy before anyone else is Big Mom. Yes, she was thrown into lava and is presumably dead. But no one is sure if the monstrous titan of a woman can be killed just like that. A fan theory states that Big Mom is not dead and is simply bidding her time to return.

Is Big Mom Actually Dead in One Piece?

Big Mom was one of the most powerful figures in the pirate world, but her downfall came during the Wano arc when Law and Kid teamed up against her. Out of desperation, Big Mom even sacrificed the lifespans of those around her to increase her strength, but to no avail. The battle ended with Big Mom falling into Wano’s magma chamber. The announcement from the narrator stated:

The Yonko, Big Mom has officially fallen.

However, it was never confirmed if she was dead or not. Her status and whereabouts still appear unknown. Pudding was also not certain if she was alive. The best way to confirm her death would be via her Vivre Card, but Eiichiro Oda has not shown its status either.

In her final moments, she drained the lifespans of everyone around her in order to win. If she has died already, those lifespans would be an utter waste as well as an unnecessary pothole. Given Eiichiro Oda’s genius and how far ahead he thinks, it is possible that he kept everyone in the dark just to revive the yonkou when people least expected it.

Big Mom’s Final Appearance Might be on the Elbaf Island

A fan theory states that Big Mom isn’t dead, and she is bound to come back to seek revenge. And what better place to do so other than Elbaf, the home to giants who hate the Yonko’s guts? In a way, it would be the best place for her to be defeated.

A battle between Luffy and Big Mom has been hinted at for a long time in One Piece. After he narrowly escaped her clutches in the Whole Cake Island arc, he vowed to defeat her. But how will he face her again if she is dead? Elbaf might present Luffy with the opportunity to face Big Mom once again, and this time, she would be fiercer than ever due to her past humiliation at the hands of Kid and Law.

Characters who have been presumed to be dead in One Piece have often returned as good as new, and a prime example is Sabo. She might return with significant damages to her system, and act even more fearsome. Her enmity with the Giants will also serve a big role in the story as the giants are bound to side with Luffy in this showdown.

One Piece manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
