Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers from One Piece Episode 1161.
Episode 1161 of One Piece may not have been the most action-heavy installment of the Elbaf arc so far, but I honestly think it delivered one of the strongest atmosphere-driven episodes in recent weeks. Between Loki’s long-awaited proper introduction, the Shanks mention, and Robin’s emotional setup, the episode constantly felt like it was quietly building toward something massive.
What surprised me the most was just how good the episode looked visually. Even though the pacing debate around the anime still exists, Toei absolutely nailed several key scenes here, especially whenever Luffy and Loki shared the screen together. The episode had a perfect mix of tension, comedy, nostalgia, and mystery that made it feel very “classic One Piece” again.
Loki Learns the Worst Way to Mention Shanks
The biggest strength of this One Piece episode was easily Loki. After all the buildup around Elbaf’s cursed prince, I was glad to see the anime finally give him the presence he deserved. What I really liked was how unpredictable Loki felt throughout the episode.
One second, he was casually negotiating with Luffy, and the next, he was mocking Shanks just to provoke him. Even while chained with Seastone restraints, he still carried himself like the most dangerous person in the Underworld.
The standout moment was obviously Luffy instantly transforming into Gear Fourth after hearing Loki insult Shanks. I loved how fast the scene escalated because it perfectly reminded viewers that Shanks is still Luffy’s emotional weak spot.
Toei also deserves credit for how clean the Gear Fourth sequence looked. The animation gave the scene far more emotional impact, and Loki casually dodging the attack while chained down only made him look even scarier.
What I found especially interesting, though, was how Loki immediately realized how emotionally attached Luffy is to Shanks. The episode quietly showed that Loki is not just strong physically. He is manipulative and psychologically sharp, too. One insult was enough for Loki to understand exactly how Luffy feels about Shanks.
Robin Quietly Stole the Emotional Side of the Episode
While Loki dominated most of the episode, Nico Robin’s return to her old hairstyle before meeting Jaguar D. Saul again ended up becoming the emotional heart of the episode for me.

Brook nervously cutting Robin’s hair, Dorry, Brogy, and the other crew members reacting emotionally, and Franky basically representing the entire fanbase, made the moment feel surprisingly heartfelt.
And then the episode immediately hits us with the final cliffhanger, revealing Saul has collapsed. That sudden tonal shift worked incredibly well because the episode kept teasing Robin and Saul’s reunion emotionally. Now it feels like something is already going wrong before the reunion can even happen.
One Piece Episode 1161 Final Verdict
I still think the anime occasionally stretches moments longer than necessary, but this was one of those episodes where the slower pacing actually helped the atmosphere. Elbaf finally feels massive, ancient, and dangerous in the anime.

Overall, I thought One Piece Episode 1161 was one of the better setup episodes the anime has delivered recently. The pacing was still slow at times, but the atmosphere, character writing, and especially the Luffy-Shanks-Loki dynamic made the episode far more engaging than a normal setup episode.
The One Piece anime is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
One Piece Episode 1161 Review: Luffy and Loki Clash Over The Strongest Yonko
One Piece Episode 1161 brilliantly uses Loki, Shanks, and Robin's emotional buildup to turn a slow setup episode into one of Elbaf's most atmospheric chapters so far.
