Mainz announced the transfer of 1. FC Nürnberg's captain Fabio Gruber. The 05ers beat the defender's former club Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the race for the Peruvian international.

The Augsburg-born center-back played in five of Peru's last six games after getting his first call at the end of 2025. The 23-year-old was the captain for 3. Liga outfit Verl and Miroslav Klose's side despite short spells at both clubs.

“With Fabio Gruber, we're getting a young, extremely combative and technically gifted center-back with a top character who has already demonstrated considerable leadership qualities at his previous clubs. We're delighted that Fabio sees his future with us at Bruchweg." said Mainz's sporting director Niko Bungert.

“From the beginning, I had very good talks with Urs Fischer and the Mainz management. I'm really looking forward to the Bundesliga, and my new challenge here in Mainz.” Gruber said in his first interview as Mainz's player.
