Nick Reiner‘s siblings played a major role in prosecutors’ decision not to seek the death penalty against him in connection with the deaths of their parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Jake and Romy Reiner made their views clear during consultations with prosecutors.

Nick Reiner, 33, has since pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and could face life without parole if convicted.

Hochman announced the decision not to seek the death penalty against Reiner on September 15 after reviewing aggravating and mitigating factors.

“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” he told reporters outside the courthouse.

The decision means life imprisonment without the possibility of parole is now the maximum sentence Reiner could receive if convicted.

Hochman emphasized that removing capital punishment does not reduce the seriousness of the allegations.

“This decision reflects our careful judgment about the most appropriate path to take in this case and does not diminish the severity of these crimes,” he said in a statement.

According to Hochman, Reiner’s siblings Jake and Romy were consulted and strongly expressed their position.

“We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings; they made their views very clear,” Hochman said, per OK! Magazine. “We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty.”

The siblings have also asked that grand jury transcripts remain sealed.

Hochman said they believe releasing details and evidence concerning their parents’ deaths would cause them “additional trauma and harm.”

Their position comes after an extraordinarily difficult year for the family.

Jake spoke publicly in August about the loss, saying: “I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested. Now it’s just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially.”

He added that having a brother at the center of the case made the loss especially painful.

Defense Points To Nick Reiner’s Mental Health History

Nick’s public defender Kimberly Greene welcomed the decision, describing it as the “right decision” and placing emphasis on his documented struggles.

“Nick has a serious mental illness and a long history of struggling with self-medicating,” Kimberly said.

She noted that his circumstances were “a tragic example of how difficult it can be for people experiencing significant mental health challenges to access and navigate the treatment and support they need.”

Kimberly added that while “nothing can undo the profound loss experienced by the Reiner family and those who loved them,” she and her team will “continue to approach this case with care, compassion and a commitment to ensuring that Nick’s circumstances are fully understood as the legal process moves forward.”

Meanwhile, Reiner has pleaded not guilty, and prosecutors continue to pursue two first-degree murder charges with special-circumstance allegations, including multiple murders and an allegation that he lay in wait.

The Double Murder Case Stems From December Killings

Rob Reiner, the acclaimed actor and director, and Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025.

Nick, their second son, was arrested later that day and subsequently charged in connection with their deaths.

The case has attracted widespread attention because of Rob’s decades-long Hollywood career.

He was known for films including “When Harry Met Sally…,” “The Princess Bride” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” while Michele worked as a photographer and producer.

The father and son had also collaborated on “Being Charlie,” a 2015 film about addiction and a strained relationship between a father and son. The project drew from experiences surrounding Nick’s struggles with substance abuse.

Reiner was formally indicted by a grand jury this year. The transcripts remain sealed for now, with the court expected to consider arguments over their release.

A Trial For Nick Reiner Is Not Expected Until Next Year

The decision over the death penalty does not bring the criminal case to an end. Reiner appeared in court on September 15 and waived his right to a speedy trial, meaning the proceedings can continue without an immediate trial date.

According to ABC News, Hochman stated that he does not expect the case to reach trial before 2027, adding: “When the defense is ready to proceed, the government will be ready to proceed.”

The next hearing is expected to address the sealed grand jury material and other matters as the defense prepares its case.

There is also a broader context surrounding the death penalty in California. No execution has taken place in the state since 2006, and Gov. Gavin Newsom imposed a moratorium on executions in 2019.

For Jake and Romy, however, the legal decision is inseparable from a family tragedy that has left them without both parents while their brother remains accused of causing their deaths.

Prosecutors have now ruled out capital punishment, but the murder case itself remains unresolved as it moves toward trial.
