Niagara cop accused of causing crash while driving drunk

Veteran officer was seriously injured in collision with another vehicle in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Thursday

A veteran cop with Niagara Regional Police is facing charges after being accused of drunk driving, which led to him suffering serious injuries following a collision with another vehicle Thursday night in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Police said officers from the St. Catharines/Thorold and Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake detachments responded at approximately 8:20 p.m. to reports of an impaired driver.

According to police, the officers located a Grey Dodge Ram Pick-up Truck in the area of Glendale Ave. and Taylor Rd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake. They attempted to conduct a traffic stop at approximately 8:45 p.m., but the motorist did not comply and continued driving the vehicle.

“A pursuit was initiated as the vehicle was demonstrating signs of being operated by an impaired driver,” police said in a news release.

Police said, at 8:49 p.m., the officers stopped their pursuit on York Rd. near Townline Rd., “as the driver began operating the vehicle in a reckless manner that was determined to be a risk to public safety.”

Officers responded to collision

Two minutes later, those same officers responded to a vehicle collision on York Rd. near Four Mile Creek Rd.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that the suspect vehicle had become involved in a collision with a second vehicle,” police said. “A male was arrested for impaired operation at scene and subsequently transported to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. There were no other injuries as a result of the collision.”

Paul-Andre Seguin, 54, of Fort Erie, is charged with impaired operation, refusing to comply with a demand for a breath sample for alcohol, flight from peace officer, dangerous operation, and the Highway Traffic Act offence of red light – proceed before green.

Police said the accused was released on a Form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.

He has been a police officer assigned to uniform patrol with Niagara Regional Police for 21 years.

Suspended with pay

Seguin has been suspended with pay pending an investigation, police said, citing the Community Safety and Policing Act.

The Special Investigations Unit, province’s police watchdog, has invoked their mandate due to injuries caused by the collision.
