New $500 toothbrush comes with AI-powered camera

A new toothbrush lets you watch the inside of your mouth as you brush in real time.

Dyson has just launched its new CameraJet toothbrush, which has an AI-powered camera that finds gaps between your teeth so it can floss while you brush. The camera uses a 100,000-pixel macro lens with a light powered by Gap Optical Targeting, the company’s AI machine-learning algorithm.

It analyzes 28 live images per second to detect gaps in your teeth within 100 milliseconds. The toothbrush’s jet then shoots a low-pressure mouthwash at the gap to floss it.

The CameraJet also connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so you can see your teeth getting cleaned as you brush. Its app even has maps, guides, and can provide feedback.

“Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth,” founder and chief engineer James Dyson said in a press release. “We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.”

It also knows when it’s time to replace your brush head. Each one comes with a radio-frequency identification tag that lets the CameraJet detect when a brush head was connected and how many times it’s been used. Along with a sonic dampener to prevent excess noise, the toothbrush uses variable sonic oscillation to change the angle of the brush to make it easier to reach the tough areas in your mouth.

It’s not cheap

You can get the CameraJet on this Dyson website for $499 U.S. It comes with the toothbrush, two regular brush heads, a charging dock and cable, and a travel case. The company recommends you use a sodium lauryl sulphate-free toothpaste and mouthwash to prevent foaming so the camera can see. The company says its own toothpaste and mouthwash, specifically designed for the CameraJet, are coming soon.
