Nagelsmann on the brink of Germany exit after DFB crisis meeting

According to Bild, the German Football Association has offered Julian Nagelsmann the option to resign following Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit, with his tenure as head coach now seemingly nearing its end.

Following Germany’s embarrassing World Cup round-of-32 exit against Paraguay on Monday, talks are underway behind the scenes to decide the future of head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

According to Bild, a three-hour meeting took place on Thursday between Nagelsmann and DFB bosses Bernd Neuendorf, Hans-Joachim Watzke, Rudi Völler and Andreas Rettig.

The German tabloid reports that the 38-year-old has been offered the chance to resign two years before his contract expires, as an opportunity to “leave the situation with his head held high.”

Nagelsmann has now been given time to reflect on the decision, but his time as Germany coach appears to be coming to an end either way.

If he doesn't resign, the German Football Association would have to activate a termination clause, which would reportedly cost around €7 million in compensation.

Nagelsmann’s situation is expected to be resolved early next week at the latest, with Jürgen Klopp still the preferred successor.
