Montreal police vehicle set on fire near SPVM headquarters

5 days ago 22

A Montreal police patrol car burned early Sunday, the SPVM said, in what the force believes was an arson attack.

Several 911 calls alerted officers to the incident around 12:30 a.m., Montreal police spokesperson Johany Charland said, leading them to discover a police SUV on fire on St-Urbain St. near de Maisonneuve Blvd., in the immediate vicinity of the force’s downtown headquarters.

Firefighters extinguished the flames, Charland said, adding that the police cruiser suffered considerable damage. No injuries were reported.

“Some incendiary material was found on the scene, so it looks like a criminal event,” she said.

Charland said those involved fled before police arrived. Officers have made no arrests.

Police expect surveillance cameras installed at their headquarters will have captured footage of the event, she said.

The arson unit is investigating.
