Michael Gregoritsch reacts after becoming Augsburg’s Bundesliga record scorer

Michael Gregoritsch expressed his pride after overtaking Alfred Finnbogason as Augsburg’s Bundesliga record goalscorer, despite his brace not being enough to secure victory against Bayer Leverkusen.

Michael Gregoritsch described becoming Augsburg’s Bundesliga record goalscorer as “something special” after his two goals helped Manuel Baum’s side to a 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Austrian struck twice shortly after half-time as Augsburg overturned a 1-0 deficit, with his brace taking him beyond Alfred Finnbogason at the top of the club’s Bundesliga scoring charts.

“I’m incredibly proud,” Gregoritsch told DAZN.

“It’s something special to be the record goalscorer for a club that has been in the Bundesliga for so long.

“I’m incredibly happy here. I’m incredibly happy that I came back in January.”

Gregoritsch also highlighted the atmosphere surrounding Augsburg following their impressive start to the campaign.

“I’m really enjoying being part of this group, and I’m really enjoying being at the club,” he added.

“There’s such positive energy around the club, and also in the stadium, that I’ve rarely experienced here.

“I think we’re doing everything we can to make sure that continues. We do that during the week in training and we did it again today in the game.”

Augsburg looked set to claim a third successive league victory before Patrik Schick’s late backheel earned Leverkusen a point.

Gregoritsch admitted surrendering the advantage was difficult, but felt the visitors deserved something after applying heavy pressure during the closing stages.

“Of course it’s tough,” he said.

“But you still have to say that we were really pinned back. We threw ourselves into everything and I think we did well.

“Still, in one or two moments we were missing that transition to give ourselves a bit of relief.

“But Leverkusen are a very, very good team. They really pinned us back, and because of that, it was probably deserved that it finished the way it did.”
