John Chayka has confirmed what many Maple leaf watchers have suspected about Max Domi’s health.

The winger/centre’s back issues, a complication that arose from early spring surgery, will keep him out of the start of training camp next week.

There was hope that a few more weeks of rest would give optimism when it came to Domi’s camp medical, but the general manager told the Canadian Press on Friday there is no timetable for a return.

“Max is going to come in and be evaluated but he’s not going to start camp,” Chayka said. “At the right time in the near future he wants to address it himself (with media).

“I think that’s best for him to do. We’ll leave it at that.”

The nature of the 32-year-old’s surgery and thus its complications are unknown. Domi played through whatever the injury was in 2025-26, with 36 points in 80 games, but a career-worst minus-29.

His $3.75 million US contract for this year will move to Long Term Injured Reserve and assist Chayka and his accountant get under the NHL’s salary cap, Toronto currently sitting at $2.75 million over the new $104 million limit.

Chayka did tell the newswire he expects defenceman Chris Tanev to pass his medical after lower body issues cost him almost all of last season.

The Leafs begin training camp next Thursday and the team opens their preseason schedule the following Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
