Two nights after erasing a two-goal deficit to beat the Cleveland Monsters in the first game of the North Division final, the Marlies couldn’t press repeat on Saturday night.

The Monsters beat the Marlies 3-1 in Cleveland, tying the best-of-five series in the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup playoffs 1-1.
On Thursday in Game 1, the Marlies won 5-2 after going down 2-0, reeling off five consecutive goals starting late in the second period.
On Saturday, the Monsters built a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Roman Ahcan and Mikael Pyyhtia.
The Marlies had no offensive pushback similar to what happened 48 hours earlier.
Lone goal by Groulx
Bo Groulx scored shorthanded in the second period to get the Marlies on the scoreboard, but Cleveland restored a two-goal lead in the third on a goal by Luca Pinelli.
Before a crowd of 14,196 at Rocket Arena, Artur Akhtyamov made 21 saves for the Marlies. In the Monsters net, Zach Sawchenko made 17 saves.
Monsters forward Zach Aston-Reese, who spent the 2022-23 season with the Maple Leafs, had an assist and was named the first start of the game.
Groulx had a team-high three shots on goal for the Marlies. Defenceman Marshall Rifai had an assist.
Toronto went 0-for-2 on the power play. Cleveland failed to score on four power plays.
The next two games of the series will be at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, with Game 3 on Wednesday and Game 4 on Friday.
If a deciding Game 5 is required, it will be on May 24 in Cleveland.
