Maple Leaf defenceman Chris Tanev was stretchered off of the ice at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday with a suspected second head injury in less than two weeks.

At 8:35 of the third period of the game against the Flyers, Toronto’s top defensive blueliner went to the ice hard after Philly’s Matvei Michkov backed into the unsuspecting Leaf. Tanev, who had a helmet-to-helmet contact in a home game against New Jersey, didn’t move for several moments while doctors on both teams attended him.

Eventually paramedics and medical staff put him on a gurney, immobilized his head and neck and, according to Sportsnet, initially were evaluating him at the arena before deciding on examination in hospital.

Earlier in the day, Tanev told reporters in Philadelphia after the morning skate he had been cleared after extensive testing, but that the Jersey game incident had not been his first National Hockey League concussion.

Michkov was initially assessed a major penalty, but it was reduced to a minor after the officials double checked the video. Toronto had demoted defenceman Dakota Mermis to the Marlies on Saturday to accommodate Tanev coming off Injured Reserve.
