Only about half (49%) of the 2,000 Canadian drivers — ages 18-35 — who responded to a survey for car accessories manufacturer Diono indicated they found dashboard symbols easy to understand.

While 29% of drivers admitted to ignoring the appearance of a car warning light, 39% said they would call a family member or ask Google to get more information about a dashboard light.

Mercifully, a whopping 81% can spot a tire pressure warning, while another 10% believe the symbol is about snack time, meaning they should stop and eat.

“Drivers understanding what the warning signs on their vehicles mean could be the difference between life and death, for you, your passengers, or other road users,” Tim Maule, CEO of Diono, said in a statement.

“These warning signs are there for your safety and should never be ignored,” he added.

“If you don’t know what a warning sign means, either refer to your car manual or take a picture and check it with Google or ChatGPT to be told what it means, then seek expert mechanical help if appropriate.”

A majority of motorists were able to easily identify the engine, oil, brakes and airbag warning lights, as well as symbols that signify the hood is open and or that a motorist’s washer fluid is running low.

When it came to warnings about lights — specifically, high beams and fog lights being on — only 52% and 46%, respectively, knew what they meant.
