A Massachusetts man who disappeared earlier this month while vacationing in South Carolina was found dead close to the home his family was renting.

Security camera footage showed Stanley Kotowski, 60, leaving the family’s Hilton Head Island rental on the morning of Aug. 16.

The video also showed Kotowski was shoeless as he left the rental. He was also without his phone and driver’s licence.

On Monday afternoon, his family confirmed that the body of a man found beneath a home four houses away from their rental was that of Kotowski.

“He just walked out the door,” his wife Jackie Kotowski told ABC affiliate WJCL.

“He had really bad insomnia for about a month. He doesn’t have dementia. His anxiety just kept getting worse and worse and worse and he started to get a little paranoid.”

The search for the missing man ended Monday when a Sea Pines Resort security officer encountered a foul smell and bugs.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Kotowski’s body was found in the crawl space of a nearby home.

On Tuesday, the local coroner revealed that Kotowski died by asphyxiation after he hung himself.

On the day he went missing, Kotowski’s wife told officers that her husband “believes Sea Pines is a ‘set up’ and has a conspiracy that the people here are out to get him. She stated that Stanley has made several statements of people at this place ‘watching him.'”

He apparently told his wife just before he left to “promise me you will go on without me.”
