The Supertri Toronto event, which used to be known as the Toronto Triathlon Festival, will be taking up plenty of high-traffic real estate on Sunday, including parts of the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Blvd. W.

“Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead by allowing extra travel time, considering alternate routes and following all posted detour signage and directions from police officers and event personnel,” Toronto Police said in a news release.

In its 13th year, the Supertri Toronto is billed as “one of North America’s most iconic urban race experiences” that includes a 1.5-km swim at Ontario Place, a 40-km cycle on the Gardiner and DVP and a 10-km run on Lake Shore.

Event expected to attract some 1,750 athletes

The triathlon, which served as a test event for the 2015 Pan Am Games, is expected to attract more than 1,750 athletes and more than 200 volunteers.

“To accommodate the event and ensure the safety of participants, spectators and volunteers, temporary road and lane closures will be in effect around Exhibition Place,” police said.

The good news is that all four major professional sports teams will either be off that day or playing elsewhere.
