The liveblog will start at 20.30 CET.

18:31Simo Frigolé

Good evening everyone, welcome to the fourth and last liveblog of the September - October international window, as Germany (1-1-1) visit Thessaloniki to take on Greece (2-1-0) in a crucial 2026/27 UEFA Nations League match. Updates to come over the next 2 hours.

18:37Simo Frigolé

Germany are 7-3-1 against Greece all-time; that defeat was, of course, last week in Augsburg, when a Dimitrios Kourbelis goal in the seventy-fourth minute caused a massive upset for Ivan Jovanović's Ethniki. The only major tournament meeting between the two was in the quarterfinals of UEFA EURO 2012, a 4-2 victory for Germany on goals from Philipp Lahm (39'), Sami Khedira (61'), Miroslav Klose (68'), and Marco Reus (74').

18:40Simo Frigolé

The two sides are out of the tunnel and onto the ground at Toumba Stadium. "Deutschlandlied" will play first over the loudspeakers, followed by "Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Ἐλευθερίαν" ("Hymn to Liberty") - after that, the coin toss and kickoff.

18:47Simo Frigolé

1': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

I mentioned in last week's liveblog how loud the visiting fans were in Augsburg, and that it would prepare Germany for the atmosphere of this one. The Greek crowd has set the tone here, whistling during the German anthem and then singing at full volume on theirs - finishing even before the anthem itself was complete. It has been long known from the many qualifying matches at Toumba that this is one of the loudest, most passionate atmospheres in Europe - and the DFB-Team will have to manage through it for the full 90 minutes tonight.

And we are underway, with Germany, in black, kicking it off and going right to left in the opening term. Greece, in white, will go left to right when they get their attacking chances.

18:49Simo Frigolé

2': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Kourbelis very nearly gets another one against Germany, getting on the end of a lob into the centre of the box from Konstantinos Tsimikas - however, his header towards the bottom-right corner is met by the hands of a diving Jonas Urbig. Huge chance for Greece as they catch the German back line off guard just one minute in.

18:51Simo Frigolé

4': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

David Raum plays the ball short on the left side of the Greek half. Derry Scherhant receives it and goes for the bottom-right corner from distance, but it is not enough to realistically put Konstantinos Tzolakis under pressure - and the Hull City FC goalkeeper gloves it down easily with both hands.

18:55Simo Frigolé

6': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Greece, at this moment, are in a good position to make the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League at the top level for the first time ever.

They have won only one notable European tournament in their history, that being UEFA EURO 2004 as complete underdogs - and it was a German, Otto Rehhagel, that coached them to that achievement and through the following six years. The now 88-year-old from Essen, Nordrhein-Westfalen is known as "βασιλιάς Όθων" ("King Otto") by supporters due to the massive success.

18:57Simo Frigolé

8': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Florian Wirtz tries to lift the ball above Tzolakis from the right side of the box, but overhits it slightly - and despite the latter being well out of his net, it goes out of play without too much pressure.

18:59Simo Frigolé

11': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Jonathan Burkardt contests for possession with Kourbelis, but his elbow catches the Asteras Tripolis midfielder, who falls to the ground. Greece win a free kick, which is easily swung into the left side of the box - Tsimikas cannot get on the end of it however, mistiming his run and that allows the ball to bounce out of play.

19:06Simo Frigolé

17': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Philipp Treu deflects the ball off Tsimikas for a corner. The following set piece is swung in near-post by Raum, but headed away for a temporary clearance from Konstantinos Mavropanos. Germany goes to the left side from there, but Scherhant's shot from distance is gloved down by Tzolakis.

19:08Simo Frigolé

19': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Lennart Karl knocks down a cross from Scherhant into the right side of the box, and then flicks it over to Wirtz. The Liverpool FC striker's header towards the top-left corner may have gone into the back of the net if it did not deflect off the head of Burkardt, who was a split-second late to duck.

19:10Simo Frigolé

22': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Scherhant wants a curler from the edge of the box to go in, he has tried multiple times in the first twenty-five minutes. The play that just happened was probably the best chance for him so far, as he wraps the ball around Konstantinos Koulierakis and Manolis Saliakas before sending it towards the top-right corner. Tzolakis is there and gloves it down with a well-timed stop, however.

19:12Simo Frigolé

24': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Tsimikas takes down Karl on the right side of the Greek third, close to the box. He pleads his case to head official Clément Turpin, but the Frenchman did not see a clean tackle to win the ball and thus Germany will get a free kick from a dangerous spot.

19:14Simo Frigolé

26': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Instead of going for a cross and hoping for the best, Karl plays the ball back to Tom Bischof, who tees it up for a powerful shot from David Raum. Despite the players in front of him, Tzolakis tracks the ball and makes a split-second, well-timed save to punch it back out of the box with both hands.

19:18Simo Frigolé

29': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

The Netherlands has taken the lead against Serbia in Eindhoven. The Oranje have outshot their opposition 11-2, 2-0 on target, and they finally get their opener at the half-hour mark from Virgil van Dijk. Teun Koopmeiners gets the assist. Germany needs to keep pace with the Dutch for the second quarterfinal spot, or else they will be in the relegation playoff matches next spring.

Live table: Netherlands (8), Greece (8), Germany (5), Serbia (0).

19:21Simo Frigolé

31': GREECE 0-1 GERMANY

TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR - J. Burkardt (assist: D. Scherhant)

Burkardt starts a counterattack from the Greek midfield, managing a sweeping tackle of Fotis Ioannidis and then playing the ball short to Scherhant to his left. The SC Freiburg winger darts his way to the edge of the area before knocking the ball into the box itself, and the Eintracht Frankfurt forward gets there for an easy tap-in, bottom-centre!

19:22Simo Frigolé

33': GREECE 0-1 GERMANY

But hang on - this one is going to VAR. Looks like they will be looking at that battle in the midfield, and whether Burkardt fouled Ioannidis as the latter went flying.

19:24Simo Frigolé

35': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

VAR DECISION: NO GOAL

After consulting with VAR officials Jérôme Brisard and Bastien Dechepy, Clément Turpin makes the final decision to bring this one back. The calm, pragmatic Jürgen Klopp looks frustrated but ultimately does not debate the decision, and it stays 0-0.

19:27Simo Frigolé

37': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

One of the members of the Greek bench has been shown a red card, and walks off yelling at Turpin. It is still unclear what caused the altercation, but it is the end of his evening and he goes down the tunnel.

19:29Simo Frigolé

41': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Mihajlo Cvetković, one of Serbia's up-and-coming talents who currently plays his football in Belgium with RSC Anderlecht, has drawn the visitors level in Eindhoven. That certainly helps Germany as if that result holds and Germany is able to get a goal that stands, the DFB-Team will move into second in the group going into November.

Live table: Greece (8), Netherlands (6), Germany (5), Serbia (1).

19:30Simo Frigolé

43': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Scherhant plays the ball short to Wirtz, who quickly passes back. The SC Freiburg forward gets his fourth shot of the evening, all from the left side of the ground - but this time, his attempt to pick out the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box hits the side netting and rolls out of play.

19:31Simo Frigolé

45': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Waldemar Anton goes into the book just before halftime, for a slightly late sliding tackle in the midfield to bring down Kourbelis.

19:32Simo Frigolé

45+1': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

French fourth official Eric Wattellier shows 4 minutes of stoppage time to be added to the first half.

19:36Simo Frigolé

45+4': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

After Scherhant's initial shot on the left side of the box is blocked, Wirtz tries for a rebound shot from the central areas, aimed towards the bottom-right corner. Burkardt tries to deflect it, but his slide misses and it rolls wide of Tzolakis and the goal.

19:38Simo Frigolé

HT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Goalless at the break between Greece and Germany in Thessaloniki. It has been a dominant half for Jürgen Klopp's DFB-Team, outshooting Greece 13-1, 3-1 on target with 74 % possession. The Germans have managed 23 touches in the Greek penalty area, compared to just two from Greece in the German box. Pass accuracy is 90 % on 318 completions for Germany, 66 % on 82 for Greece.

This is very similar to how the match in Augsburg went, and Greece were fortunate enough to have things play out that way to surprise with a fortunate bounce in the last twenty minutes. Can they do it again? That is the question, but it stands 0-0 going into the second term.

19:50Simo Frigolé

HT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Alexandros Kyrizidis and Vangelis Pavlidis are out of the match, replaced by Thanasis Androutsos and Konstantinos Karetsas at LM and ST. This is the fifteenth cap for the 29-year-old Androutsos, who plays his club football at OFI Crete; as for the Belgium-born Karetsas, who plays his club football in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, this is his fourteenth appearance at the senior level at just 18 years old after switching from the Belgian U21 national squad.

19:53Simo Frigolé

46': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

The second half is now underway in Thessaloniki. Greece, in white, will kick it off and go right to left; Germany, in black, will go left to right.

19:57Simo Frigolé

49': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

From the right side of the German third, Karetsas tries to thread the ball to Tsimikas on the left side of the box - but a well-timed slide from Karl does just enough to clear it away. The following corner is swung far-post, but the header from Giorgos Masouras is gloved down by Urbig.

19:59Simo Frigolé

51': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Christos Zafeiris, who plays his club football on this ground with PAOK, goes into the book for grabbing onto the shirt of Bischof and then wrestling him to the ground while looking away. Needless to say, Clément Turpin is not hearing any of the complaints from the 23-year-old midfielder.

20:02Simo Frigolé

54': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Scherhant and Saliakas collide on the left side of the Greek third. Six of the Greek players immediately converge on Turpin, wanting a card to be drawn and claiming that Scherhant's elbow went into the side of the Olympiakos right-back, but there will be no further punishment from the incident and it will be deemed as a foul at most.

20:06Simo Frigolé

57': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Free kick to Germany from the left side of the Greek half. Wirtz swings the ball into the right side of the box, past a leaping Kourbelis and at the feet of Malick Thiaw. The 25-year-old Newcastle centre-back taps the ball with his right boot in order to bring it down, but is unable to keep it in play and the hosts will have a goal kick - which Tzolakis will punt upfield.

20:09Simo Frigolé

60': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Ioannidis makes his way into the left side of the German third on a very quick counterattack, and has to outmuscle Thiaw to get to the inside angle. Thiaw pushes him off his mark and takes possession in the process, leaving the Sporting CP forward on the ground. Eventually, the ball is deflected off Kourbelis and goes out of play. Ioannidis has some words for both Urbig and Raum, the latter of which pulled him down away from the ball just minutes earlier.

20:10Simo Frigolé

63': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Said El Mala and Nick Woltemade will take the places of Lennart Karl and Jonathan Burkardt at RM and ST, in the first double change from Jürgen Klopp tonight. Both sides are playing a flat 4-4-2 at the moment.

20:11Simo Frigolé

65': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Woltemade makes an almost instant impact, playing the ball to Scherhant on the left side of the box. The 23-year-old forward from Berlin has a go for the bottom-right corner, not missing by too much.

20:13Simo Frigolé

67': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Treu takes down Tsimikas with a sweeping tackle on the left side, close to the box, giving Greece a decent amount of space for a cross into the box. Tsimikas whips it in, but the header from Mavropanos goes to the right. Karetsas crosses from the other side, but Urbig spots it in time to glove the ball down with both hands and thus freeze play.

20:15Simo Frigolé

70': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Joshua Zirkzee has given the Netherlands their lead back in Eindhoven, thus moving the Oranje to the top of the table. Ruben van Bommel gets the assist.

If that result holds, then Germany will need to win / draw this match to stay in contention for the two quarterfinal spots and avoid the relegation playoffs. The score is now 2-1 to the Netherlands in Eindhoven, and the live table looks like this: Netherlands (8), Greece (8), Germany (5), Serbia (0).

20:18Simo Frigolé

72': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Dimitrios Kourbelis will be brought off - replacing him at RCM is Christos Mouzakitis, who makes his twelfth appearance at the senior level at 19 years old. Ivan Jovanović has now made three changes with his squad, two remain for the Ethniki and those will probably be used in the final ten minutes to push for a late victory.

20:19Simo Frigolé

74': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Ivan Jovanović and Clément Turpin share some words, for long enough that the 64-year-old Serbia-born manager goes into the book.

20:22Simo Frigolé

76': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Thiaw catches Ioannidis up high with an elbow during a contest for possession in the German half. Greece have another free kick from a dangerous spot, which Tsimikas curls into the box with his left boot; Raum gets there and makes a standing interception.

20:25Simo Frigolé

78': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Ivan Jovanović chooses to put defensive stability first, replacing a tired Konstantinos Mavropanos with Panagiotis Retsos at RCB. Manolis Saliakas goes into the book with a yellow card shortly afterward as he trips up El Mala with a sliding tackle from behind.

20:30Simo Frigolé

82': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Mika Baur and Bambasé Conté take the places of Derry Scherhant and Tom Bischof at LM and LCM within Jürgen Klopp's German 4-4-2. Both sides have only one change remaining.

20:33Simo Frigolé

86': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Baur crosses the ball from the left side of the Greek third, close to the box. Inside the box itself, Woltemade heads the ball to his right to Treu - who powers it over the bar and out.

20:35Simo Frigolé

88': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Fotis Ioannidis is replaced by 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas at ST, in the fifth and final change for Ivan Jovanović's Greece tonight. This is the sixth international appearance for the Athens-born talent, who has made quite an impression at Brighton & Hove Albion FC with four goals in his first 26 Premier League matches - two of which have come in his first five matches this season.

20:36Simo Frigolé

90+1': GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

3 minutes will be added before this one comes to a close in Thessaloniki.

20:40Simo Frigolé

FT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

This match finishes as it started: 0-0. Germany were the much better side statistically, but the struggles for Jürgen Klopp continue in his first major tournament as Bundestrainer as the apparent lone goal in the first half was ultimately ruled out due to a foul. Massive result for Greece, who drop to second in the table following the Dutch victory over Serbia but are still three points clear of third going into November.

20:48Simo Frigolé

FT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Shots in the second half finished 8-4 to Germany, 1-1 on target with 67 % possession. Pass accuracy finished 88 % to Germany on 253 completions, 72 % for Greece on 102. Touches in the opposing area finished 22-6 to Germany.

20:50Simo Frigolé

FT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

And overall, shots finished 21-5 to Germany, 4-2 on target with 70 % possession. Pass accuracy finished 89 % to Germany on 571 completions, 69 % for Greece on 185. Touches in the opposing area finished 45-8 to Germany.

20:53Simo Frigolé

FT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

So, going into November, the table looks like this:

1. Netherlands (2-2-0, 8 pts) 7-5

2. Greece (2-2-0, 8 pts) 5-3

3. Germany (1-2-1, 5 pts) 3-2

4. Serbia (0-0-4, 0 pts) 3-8

With Serbia now certain to play in the relegation playoff or be directly relegated to League B, it is now between the Netherlands, Greece, and Germany for the two quarterfinal places. If Germany loses to Serbia on 13. November and the Netherlands - Greece match finishes in a draw, Germany goes into the relegation playoff; otherwise, things go down to the final day as Germany hosts the Netherlands and Greece hosts Serbia.

20:54Simo Frigolé

FT: GREECE 0-0 GERMANY

Both sides play again on Friday, 13. November at 20.45 (CET): Netherlands - Greece and Serbia - Germany.
