Investigators are still working on uncovering the root of Liam Payne‘s death.

The latest development in the late singer’s death saga led to the release of one of the three men being investigated, leaving behind two more personalities connected to the case.

Liam Payne passed away on October 16, 2024, after he fell from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The singer suffered from severe polytrauma and internal and external bleeding.

The Argentine businessman known as Rogelio Luis “Roger” Nores has now been cleared of having anything to do with the singer’s unfortunate passing. Authorities have not stopped digging deep into the cause of Payne’s death nearly two years after that tragic fall. 

Nores was previously accused of hosting the singer in Argentina and taking charge of his expenses, including the use of hard drugs, at a luxury hotel in Buenos Aires. However, his defense attorney, Rafael Cúeno Libarona, stated that it was evident his client would walk because the court could not find him guilty of any wrongdoing.

“Roger never had the duty of caring for Payne, much less caring for his addictions. He was not Liam’s guarantor. He was his friend, not his physician, nurse, or therapist,” the attorney declared.

When Nores was indicted on a manslaughter charge about two years ago in November 2024, the singer’s father, Geoff Payne, was there as a key witness against him.

As reported by The New York Post, the decision to let the businessman go was reached on June 9 by three appeal court judges who agreed with the initial ruling that Payne was an adult free to use whatever he wanted without Nores’ supervision.

Prior to the court clearing Nores to walk free, the manslaughter accusation against him had been dropped in 2025, leaving prosecutors with one more point to drive home.

The prosecuting team insisted that Nores must be tried on the basis that he supplied drugs to Payne, which led to his death, but it was dismissed in April 2026, without any challenge from prosecutors.

Investigators in the case sought permission to examine Nores’ electronic devices, alongside the remaining two suspects, after discovering a message on Payne’s cell requesting six grams.

The court did not let this move fly, as it dismissed it on the basis that Nores never responded to the message, followed by a denial for further forensic analysis.

Meanwhile, the two men accused of selling cocaine to Payne are still awaiting trial, although sources claimed that plea negotiations are underway, raising the possibility that the case could be resolved without a full courtroom trial. 

Court records also show the late singer’s family has not challenged the rulings clearing Nores or the other defendants, insisting that their priority remains protecting the late singer’s dignity, reputation, and legacy.

The waiter, who had contact with Payne before his death, was picked up at his family home on January 3, 2025, on suspicion that he supplied drugs to the singer in the early hours of October 14. He has been fired from his job at the Las Lilas restaurant and was formally charged in February with no option of house arrest.

Braian Paiz’s mother, Sandra Paiz, shared with The Daily Mail in 2025, as noted by The Blast, that her son was being subjected to narrowing conditions in the facilities he has been transferred to. Braian had complained to his mother during a phone call about a lack of running water and being made to sleep on a damp mattress.

“I had a bad cold and cough for several weeks without medical attention. During winter, we bathed almost the entire time with cold water,” the waiter said. He continued that the case had taken a psychological toll on him, as he was really affected by the news of Payne’s death, but he was focused on gaining freedom.

Despite these experiences, Braian was glad to have met the singer because he was a fan, but that did not stop his concerns about being in prison for many years if he made no headway in his case.

He mourned the feeling of emptiness that trailed Payne’s absence at the defunct group’s 15th-year anniversary, often celebrated with nostalgia.

He added that nothing could have prepared him for the death of Payne, who was one of his closest friends. On the bright side, the tragic passing did bring the boys closer, leading them to focus on rebuilding their friendship and growing stronger as friends.

Payne welcomed a son, Bear, with singer Cheryl Tweedy in 2017 and continued to co-parent with the English celebrity before his death. Following his passing, alongside the fact that he was unmarried at the time of his death, the UK intestacy laws kicked in, setting up Bear to inherit the estate.

The singer did not have a will in place at the time of his death, but final revisions of his estate placed its final net value at £21,898,779 ($28.9 million). Cheryl and music industry attorney Richard Bray were appointed in 2025 as administrators of the estate, and a High Court in the UK issued Letters of Administration placing a broader responsibility on the duo.

The implication of this upgrade means funds from Payne’s estate can now be used to benefit Bear before his 18th birthday. He would have access to portions of the estate that may be spent on the child’s education, welfare, and upbringing, while the remaining funds will be placed into trust until he reaches legal age.
