If this title sounds like something from the Star Wars saga or Marvel Comics, it suggests something more sinister. Yes, in spite of all his embarrassing scandals, it’s quite possible that Justin Trudeau could get re-elected in next year’s election. Such is the crazy world of politics. Time is a healer. However, the main reason Trudeau will likely survive is the GTA electorate, who continue to keep him in office. Without them, Teflon Man would have slid away years ago. The demographic profile of voters in our area suggests that Toronto is anti-conservative, and votes against Poilievre count as votes for Trudeau. I hope I’m wrong because I’m one of the taxpaying citizens whose money supports his spending spree.

(Those large pockets of traditional strongholds for the Liberals may well look elsewhere in the next election. Even the public opinion polling in Ontario looks grim for Trudeau and his team. But yes, memories are short and there is plenty of time before then next election)

WE ARE TOO PREOCCUPIED

The carbon tax has managed to induce many shrill complaints in Canada, including by the corporate news media — even though the tax is more than recovered (except for high-income earners) via government rebate. Now it seems even B.C.’s NDP government has buckled under the pressure to cancel this tax, however ultimately beneficial it is for most taxpayers. Doing so will likely most benefit the greatest carbon polluters. We humans can be so heavily preoccupied with our own individual little worlds, however overwhelming to us, that we will still miss the biggest of crucial pictures. Also problematic is the very large and growing populace who are too overworked, worried and even angry about food and housing unaffordability for themselves or their family — all while on insufficient income — to criticize the fossil fuel industry, etc., for environmental damage their policies cause/allow, particularly when not immediately observable.

(It’s a tax grab plain and simple, but you feel free to send extra of your own income tax to Ottawa)

CONSEQUENTIAL DECISION

So our prime minister says Ukraine should be given weapons that enable it to strike deep inside Russia. Not only might this hasten a possible world war scenario, but it ignores an important aspect pertaining to Canadian foreign policy. Would former prime minister Lester Pearson — the father of peaceful “Pearsonian Internationalism” — have concurred with such insanity? And whether we agree or not, since 1991, Russians regard Ukraine as essentially a CIA base posing as a state. Does Trudeau actually believe that portraying himself as a NATO “hawk” will gain him votes?

(Trudeau was following suit as the U.S. is considering the use of long range missiles and likely didn’t give this much thought on his own)
